Description

Canine or Feline, which animal holds the market on intelligence? Dogs or cats? I think you will be surprised by what this book reveals.

Peppy was a maverick Border collie when she first appeared at William Horne’s door. Still, it was not long before she stole his heart with her intelligence, feisty attitude, and loyalty. Although her life ended tragically and way too soon, she still holds an important place in his heart to this day.

In a narrative that lovingly details all his adopted pets, Horne reveals the unique personalities and characteristics of the dogs and cats who found a place in his family. Cinnamon, who had a gift of seeing colors and doing tricks, was sensitive to those with physical impairments. Lucky, a little mixed breed, loved riding in the car from Florida to a mountain cabin in Tennessee. Sassy, a very curious calico cat, perched atop the sofa to watch the squirrels and rabbits play. Fritz, a rag tag black kitty, proudly captured sparrows in his mouth, only to release them into freedom moments later.

Fifty Years of Cats and Dogs is a poignant tribute to one family’s adopted pets who brought joy and happiness into their three-ring circus called life.

CHAPTER ONE
Peppy, Borderline Border Collie
Peppy was a maverick. We bought a new house and barely moved in and settled down, when this maverick dog showed up.
Our property was completely fenced in with gates for entry to the walkway and driveway. Because of our three-year-old son, we kept all gates closed so he could have access to the yard. This maverick dog would never attempt to come in the yard or leave the neighborhood.
One day, our neighbor’s child was playing with this wayward dog and she bit the child. Because we were new in the neighborhood, the neighbor thought the dog belonged to us. When we were notified of the dog bite, my wife offered to take her to the doctor and have her checked. The neighbor advised my wife that the skin was not broken and invited her in for a cup of coffee. The (good) thing about the dog bite? This started a friendship that lasted for over 40 years.
You guessed it. From that day on, the wayward dog was no longer wayward. She became the Horne’s dog and we named her Peppy. We then carried Peppy to the Vet to have her shots updated. When we returned home, we placed her inside the gated fence and forbade her to ever go outside.
It did not take long to find out Peppy was highly intelligent. We had no way of knowing her age. We knew she was not a puppy. So, I started teaching her several tricks and she caught on very quickly.
