INTRODUCTION

Aromatherapy can be a very helpful, and it can also be a healthy alternative medicinal boost to dogs as well. A word of caution, however, some of the blends and essential oils that might work well for us as humans, may not be quite so great for dogs, and in fact can be quite dangerous.
Many of the essential oils come from plants, and it only takes a small amount of the oil to produce the effect you are looking for, as the oils are very powerful. As an example, Lavender oil is a very well-known relaxant and can be used in minute quantities to calm pets or make them feel sleepy. This can be used when traveling to overcome the anxiety a pet might have.

Most animals, especially dogs, have a very acute sense of smell. Because of this fact, essential oils should be diluted when being used on pets. Only oils that are of therapeutic grade should be used in order to rule out any adverse substances which can enhance any adverse effects in its use.
People in general tend to overuse essential oils, and if they leave the scents out most of the time and if they have dogs, then it can turn out to be too much for the dog. Dogs’ process the oils differently than humans do and they are much more sensitive to them than we are. In too high a quantity, these oils can do damage to the liver.
One thing is for sure, that anyone who does try aromatherapy on a dog had better be very sure that they know what they are doing, beyond a doubt. What smells great to us can also be toxic to animals. Given that a dog's sense of smell can be up to 10 thousand times more sensitive than ours, and if by chance some of the oil were to get on the dog's skin, he might lick it off, thus increasing the possibility of harm.
It is best to go lightly at first, yet give the dog a place to go if he needs to escape. Ask your veterinarian if certain oils would be good and in what quantities they can be used, such as the lavender to calm him.
Another rule of thumb is to always use essential oils around your pets in very highly diluted quantities. Never use the oil right out of the bottle. Never give any of the oils orally to your dog, and if for some reason your dog has ingested any of them, call your veterinarian right away.
You should be hesitant in using the oils indiscriminately as scents around the house too, as they are absorbed through the skin and through smell. If you are enjoying the lovely scent of oil, and your dog is panting at the door, then you had better let him out quickly.
CHAPTER ONE

Essential Oils for Dogs- Advantages and Disadvantages
There are many advantages to using essential oils for your pets. Essential oils are quick and easy to use and in many cases, you don't even have to actually apply them to your pet but can diffuse them in and around your pet’s favorite places to let them get the benefits.
