Description

THE “FINAL STRAW”
It got to be pretty comical, but I think the “final straw” was when we had the masks on top of our heads! That’s when Mommy gave us “THE LOOK”, and Jake said, “Uh-Oh, I think she means business now! We’d better shape up and do what she wants us to do, or we might get “SPANKED”! (I still don’t know what “spanked” is, but I don’t think it’s good).

Extrait

“In part because of the endearing characters, Peaches and the 19 Cobras is a fun, at times quirky, little story to read. It follows a family, however untraditional, on their journey as they are living through the pandemic. It sheds humor on a topic that is actually quite serious.
To start with, the two main characters are unique in that they are not people at all! Jake and Peaches are dogs. Best friends and sidekicks, we follow their thoughts and adventures during the pandemic. It is fun to see the pandemic, such a serious topic, through their eyes as they try to understand what is going on. It adds some humor in a time that was so hard for so many. For example, Jake, instead of hearing Covid-19, heard 19 Cobras. So, especially in the beginning, he was looking everywhere to keep everyone safe from those snakes. In the book, we even get to see the dogs with their masks.
In all the humor with the dogs, you can’t forget their owner. Like many, she is trying to cope during this unusual time while still carrying on as normal a life as possible. She makes masks for others, decorates her Christmas trees, and goes to her summer cottage in Maine, all the while social distancing. It is very clear in her book that her beloved animals are part of what gets her through.

“When the pandemic began to pick up critical speed in 2020. and quarantine began for most people, it left many with lots of time and the creative urge to do something with it. For the author of this book, she took her existing hobbies and merged storytelling with them, using crafts and photographs to tell a whimsical and supportive story. Peaches and Jake are two dogs that mistake COVID-19 for a dangerous set of nineteen cobras, and though the fear is present and powerful, they find ways to have fun and stay sane in isolation as a family. Whether it describes getting up to hijinks, staying in touch with friends, or reorganizing their living space, each page features a humorous story with cute pet pictures that will hopefully ease the tension from readers looking for relief from a global crisis.
Being able to take a tough situation and spin something positive out of it is a quality that people look to in uncertain times. Likewise, the innocence of a beloved pet can be a much-needed boon in an environment where bad news and negativity persist in seemingly every corner. Readers who like dogs, positivity, or just a little silliness will get relief just by flipping through the pages and the photos in this book. Writing on a subject that can be so tragic or heart-breaking, yet deftly winding around it and trying to put it into the pile with every other challenge, takes a skilled hand. To do so, the writer must also have an honest desire to improve the collective mood. That requirement is firmly met and on display in this pleasant, relaxing read.”

INTRODUCTION

I hope you enjoy our little story about our adventures and our life during the pandemic of 2020. You know, when you’re home alone all this time, quarantined with two dogs, you’re talking to them all the time, and then you start thinking like them; thus, 19 Cobras came to be. Peaches and Jake are two amazing rescue dogs that I’ve had since they were three years old. Jake is ten now, and Peaches is seven. They keep me entertained, make me laugh a lot, and are my constant companions. In short, they are my babies. So I wanted to share some of their antics with you.
19 Cobras is an entertaining book that puts a little humor into a very serious time in our lives. I hope you get a chuckle or two out of it. It was written to help take our minds off the sad things that were happening and put some happy thoughts into our lives, even if it is just for a little while and remind us all how truly blessed we are. Now, sit back, put your feet up, relax, and get ready to smile.

Always,

Paula Bailey
I KNOW I HEARD WHAT I THOUGHT I HEARD

Hello, my name is Peaches, and this is my big brother, Jake. Jake is my best friend, and he’s really smart and very brave ! We’re sitting in our front room at our house in Florida. This is my story about the 19 Cobras and the pandemic here in 2020.
It seems that sometime late in 2019, there was this really bad virus that started in China, and it was spreading everywhere—all over the world! Early in 2020, it came to our country, and on March 11, this virus became very serious here, so serious that our government declared it a pandemic . Mommy says that means it has spread everywhere! I heard them saying on TV that we should all protect ourselves by staying home, and if we do go out, we should wear a mask and wash our paws—I mean, hands —a lot and stay away from crowds. I kept hearing them talking about “19 Cobras” on the news. They kept saying, “19 Cobras this” and “19 Cobras that,” so I guess that’s the name of the new virus, “19 Cobras.”
IT’S ALL ABOUT WHAT YOU (THINK) YOU HEAR

What I heard them say on the news was that there were these cobras—19 of them, and if one got you, and you got infected, then you could infect other people you got close to, and that is how this virus was spreading, because people would get sick and lots of us would die just by touching something one of those sick people touched or by just breathing their air!
I’M NOT TALL! (BUT I DO HAVE A TAIL)

Now, Mommy says I sometimes like to tell a tall tale, but just look at me—I am really short . I have very short legs, so just how in the world could I tell a tall tale with these short legs? There’s just no way!

Oh man, I was pretty scared when I heard about those 19 Cobras and that they were causing people all over the world to get sick and die ! And that if one got you, or if you got it, you were doomed !
