Preface
So much has happened in the German Shepherd world since 1988, when the last edition of my book was published, that I thought it was time for an update. My publisher agreed, and I have been researching the many facets of this wonderful breed for over a year in order to include all the new and wondrous activities available to German Shepherds and we who love them.
German Shepherd owners have more choices today than ever before in performance activities. The American Kennel Club and the German Shepherd Dog Club of America offer titles and incentives to those trainers who want to train their dogs to herd sheep. As impractical as it may seem, it is still fun to see how your dog will react when faced with anywhere from 5 to 100 sheep. These herding classes will be offered at the National.
Agility trials have come very much into vogue. Many handlers and dogs who are bored with Obedience competition find the Agility exercises fun and challenging. The AKC is offering titles for the different levels of expertise. The GSDCA is also offering incentives such as certificates and German Shepherd pins to those who win titles. And starting in 1996, an Agility Trial was offered at the National.
In Obedience the AKC is offering a UDX title for those dogs who have successfully qualified in ten shows in both Utility B and Open B. The GSDCA is offering a German Shepherd pin as an incentive.
A new Championship Title, CT, will be given to those German Shepherd Dogs who earn the three Tracking titles, TD, TDX and VST. This is really a challenge.
More people than ever are joining Schutzhund clubs. Many of the more open-minded Schutzhund enthusiasts realize that the dogs who are closer to the German Shepherd Conformation Standard make better Working Dogs. Top SV Conformation judges are coming to America frequently to conduct Breed Surveys, Courage Tests and Conformation Shows. These shows are as popular and well attended as some of the large AKC Shows. German Shepherd breeders in the United States, whose stock carries the top German bloodlines, are supporting these shows with their own American-bred entries, and German handlers are coming over to handle the dogs. The German judges are wholeheartedly supporting all the breeders who register their dogs with the SV. Some of the more prominent breeders are also showing their dogs in Germany. The GSDCA offered the B Schutzhund Class at the National in 1996. This was a first and a step in the right direction. It will be beneficial if the dogs are also registered with the SV since it is part of the Schutzhund program.
In this country some dedicated American breeders are taking a serious look at the German Shepherd Standard. As a result, we are seeing more dogs who are physically sound, who not only have beautiful side gaits but are also true coming and going. For many years the dogs being shown were too extreme and overangulated and a far cry from the German Shepherd described in our breed Standard. There are many beautiful German Shepherds in this country. If the majority of the American breeders will just realize we have an excellent German Shepherd Standard exactly the way it is, and adhere to it, they will again gain the respect of all German Shepherd fanciers.
Regardless of your own particular interest in the German Shepherd Dog, remember that this breed is capable of being many things to many people. Your love for the breed, therefore, should be as great and encompassing as the German Shepherd Dog Standard.
