Foreword
The times they are a changing. . . . nothing could be more true for the Jack Russell Terrier. This unique little working terrier, once known and loved only by the working terrier men of England, has now gained enormous notoriety. Jack Russells are now known throughout the world, and desired by many. They can be found in TV shows, movies, commercials and magazine ads; there seems to be no end to their versatility. Although they are now known of by many, they are known well only by those who have lived with and loved them for many years.
Long-time breed enthusiasts do not see this trend in popularity as an asset to this feisty little type of working terrier, but rather a possible threat to its future. Life with a Jack Russell Terrier is unique and, at times, trying-it is not for the weak of heart, the professional with little time at home or one who enjoys a sedentary lifestyle. It is only for those with a love of adventure and continuous activity, a strong will, a good sense of humor and the ability to understand and appreciate what is perhaps the most intelligent canine in the world.
Very little has been accurately written about the Jack Russell Terrier over the years, and there was little need for solid information until recently. People generally learned about Jack Russells only by meeting one or more and their owners, often around horse barns or sporting events. However, with Jack Russells seeming to appear just about everywhere, it is now very important that anyone attracted to this unique little dog have the opportunity to learn as much as possible before embarking on the adventure of owning one.
What is so unusual about Jack Russell Terriers? One might say it is their extreme intelligence, their unwavering courage, their enormous heart, their never-ending humorous antics, their amazingly athletic and energetic structure or their loyal devotion. If you can imagine an overabundance of all of these outstanding characteristics packed into a twelve- to fifteen-pound structure, with a body and brain that rarely slow down, you might begin to understand that this is no ordinary little dog.
Above all, one must remember that into this little dog was born a purpose: to work in the earth, sometimes as deep as fifteen feet or more below the surface, to locate and face a quarry equal or larger in size and strength and to drive it from the earth and on the run, so the hunt could go on. This was a big career for a little dog, requiring courage that is neither known nor understood by most canines or humans. Jack Russells are driven by pure instinct and love for their job.
Although not many Jack Russells in the United States today will do any real earth work, those who choose this type of companion must understand that it remains the soul of their existence. To know and appreciate this terrier is to understand what it is about. Digging is the function into which these terriers were born, and the instinct to perform this function has been preserved in this unique little working dog for nearly 200 years. To lose that drive and instinct, or to change the structure needed to fulfill the task, would be to turn this terrier into something else entirely.
Jack Russell Terriers can and do make wonderful pets and companions, in the right situation. However, their great intelligence and endless energy must be employed in some way, and safely channeled for the protection of the terrier and those around it. If this can be achieved, great harmony will abound, and you will enter an adventure that you will never want to be without till the day you die: life with a Jack Russell Terrier.
In this book you will learn a great deal about this little dog. Catherine Brown has years of experience with the working Jack Russell. She has dedicated many years to Russell Rescue, and her experiences with the rehabilitation of displaced Jack Russells will benefit everyone considering, or learning to live with, a Jack Russell Terrier. Read it carefully, and learn from its contents.
You may determine that this is not the dog for you. If so, you have probably made a thoughtful decision. If you choose to share your life with a Jack Russell Terrier, learn to understand the nature of the terrier, and protect its heritage and its future. Work with those who have preserved this unique dog for so many years, keeping it sound in mind and body. Its future lies in our hands. We hope we are up to the challenge.

Acknowledgments
Ailsa Crawford, the founder of the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America, receives my deepest thanks for her tireless work creating the club and its excellent registry. She has done the most in her work to preserve, protect and encourage the work of this dog in the United States. Her dedication is an inspiration. My deepest admiration and respect are for her work on behalf of this terrier.
My appreciation for the dog directed me to dedication to the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America. The motto of the club, Preserve, Protect, and Work the Jack Russell Terrier, covers much of what one needs to understand about the dog.
Terri Batzer deserves a stand-up ovation for her work for the Jack Russell and the JRT
