Description

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that food prices will increase up to 8.5 percent in 2022. How do we cope with the inflation? A good way to help households cope with every increasing food price is to cook and eat more meals at home. According to Forbes Magazine, it is five times more expensive to eat out than to cook at home.
With the goal to help you to a better future in both health and your finance, authors Kathleen Ho and Richard Williams will guide you on how to cook everyday Vietnamese dishes, the healthiest and most delicious cuisine in the world. In this cookbook, you will find simple but yummy recipes with healthy and inexpensive ingredients like vegetables, chicken, and fish. To make the recipes are easier for all readers worldwide to understand, Kathleen and Richard used two both the metric and imperial systems at measurement.

To Our Readers
The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic fallout caused a significant loss for many of us. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on June 23, 2022, that there were 6,322,311 confirmed deaths by COVID-19. Many of us have lost someone we love, and many of them are financial providers for our families.
Besides losing our family members and friends, many of us have lost our job and home. In addition, many others have faced health issues after catching COVID-19. While most countries worldwide have struggled with the pandemic, we have had to deal with another tragedy: the Ukraine-Russia War.
These two significant worldwide crises have put more stress on our shoulders recently. The cost of living has increased rapidly; as a result, it made our lives more challenging. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported, “From May 2021 to May 2022, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 8.6 percent, the largest 12-month increase since the period ending December 1981.” 1 By the same token, Statista, a German company specializing in market and consumer data, found that “the inflation rate of the European Union reached a record high of 7.8 percent in March 2022. Prior to late 2021, the inflation rate in the EU was highest in July 2008, when it was 4.4 percent.” 2
Furthermore, Deloitte, an international professional services network headquartered in London , reported, “Between May 2020 and February 2022, FAO’s Food Price Index went up by 55.2%, led by a 159.4% rise in prices of edible oils, followed by strong growth in prices of sugar, dairy, and cereals.” 3 The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) also predicts that “ in 2022, all food prices are now predicted to increase between 7.5 and 8.5 percent, food- away-from-home prices are predicted to increase between 6.0 and 7.0 percent, and food-at-home prices are predicted to increase between 8.5 and 9.5 percent.” 4 While the cost of everything goes up like a skyrocket, our salary and wages do not increase enough to cope with this inflation. For many of us around the world, regular meals have become so expensive that we wonder how we can survive, right?
“What can we do to cut some expenses so we can have food on our family table daily?” We bet you have often asked yourself this question. Many of our friends and family members have asked us the same question. An effective way to help households cope with every increasing food price is to cook and eat more meals at home.
Undoubtedly, eating at home is one of the most practical ways to save money. Eating at home is not only good for our health, but it will also benefit us financially. Let us find out how much we can save by eating at home versus eating out.
Forbes , a well-known American business magazine owned by Integrated Whale Media Investments and the Forbes family , found that “it is almost five times more expensive to order delivery from a restaurant than it is to cook at home. And if you’re using a meal kit service as a shortcut to a home cooked meal, it’s a bit more affordable, but still almost three times as expensive as cooking from scratch.” 5
Below is a graph that Forbes posted for their findings (based on US food costs).

Assuming you are single and live in the United States, if you eat three meals a day at home, how much can you save per day, month, and year compared to eating at a restaurant or using a meal kit? Let’s do the math.
