This is a timely and most valuable resource in the crucial sphere of leadership, especially for the Church in Africa. It has the added relevance in that it comes from the pen of one who is both a seasoned theoretician as well as a lifelong practitioner in the field of institutional leadership and management.
Professor Watson Omulokoli, Church History
Professor, Kenyatta University, and Chancellor, Africa
International University, Nairobi, Kenya.
Whatever your view or style of Christian leadership, this book enables you to assess its effectiveness and also directs you to other resources that you need to become a better leader. Drawing from his vast experience as a teacher, administrator, and leader in the church, the author challenges the Christian community not only to make disciples but also to equip, in a changing world, the saints for the work of the ministry.
Rev. Dr. Elijah F. Akhahenda, Communication Professor,
St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, Texas, USA.
There is a compelling purpose and motivation to write the book, which is to narrow the gap between complex leadership theories and practice at any leadership level. It is based on the awareness that leadership principles and concepts can be learned, shared, and modelled. The author seeks to promote morality, ethics, principles, conviction, transparency, trustworthiness, and honesty, virtues that are rare in the field of contemporary leadership, and which can be acquired through attending seminars, coaching, mentoring, and reading.
Rev. Professor Dan C. O. Kaseje, MD, PhD,
Vice Chancellor, Great Lakes University, Kisumu, Kenya.
This book is not only timely and relevant but also demonstrates the author’s discernment, courage and in-depth understanding of a field in which scholarship is under development. This book should find easy resonance with scholars and students of leadership, leaders of organisations, churches, managers, and those aspiring to be leaders. I congratulate the writer for authoring the book and hope that it will challenge the readers to strive for excellence in their endeavours.
Rev. Professor James Kombo, Deputy Vice Chancellor
Academic Affairs, Daystar University, Nairobi, Kenya.
The present moral decadence and pessimism that pervades our social, political, economic, cultural, religious and educational institutions is now widely believed to contribute to leadership failure in our society. As a result, those who have acquired power legally, those who have grabbed it and those aspiring to leadership positions are all viewed with distrust, scepticism or even cynicism. But the author, a long standing practitioner and keen observer, has isolated and put together for us in this stimulating book the core principles for a radical and transformative leadership praxis of our time. I strongly recommend it. Grab it, read it, ponder upon it, practise and inculcate the leadership ethos outlined therein.
Aloo Osotsi Mojola, PhD, Translation Consultant,
United Bible Societies and Adjunct Professor,
Great Lakes University, Kisumu, Kenya.
The greatest blessing any organisation or nation can have is a good leader. Yet great leaders are not born but made. In the wake of bad leadership lies many ruined souls, homes, families, businesses, churches, government, nations and all sorts of social and public enterprises. Hence the importance of effective leaders whom the author of this resources seeks to nurture. This book proves invaluable to the present and future generations.

Fellow, Institute of Certified Public Accountants of
Kenya, Member, Kenya Institute of Management.
This book is a real one-stop analytical tool for leadership development. It is a must-read for serious students of leadership, managers, and leaders of organisation and institutions, a book leaders can’t wait to buy.
Canon Wycliffe Balongo, PhD.,
Leadership Development Consultant, a Pastor and Adjunct
Lecturer Daystar University, Nairobi, Kenya
This is a book that takes you through the anatomy of leadership in a simple but practical way. It is as easy and interesting as the author intended it to be. It is not often that you get a book that achieves what the author has done with Character-Centred Leadership: guiding the leader in reflection as he or she seeks to enhance their effectiveness as agents of transformation in a volatile environment that is fraught with all manner of challenges. It is my prayer that those who read this book will find it a useful tool, as they seek to live up to Stratserve’s objective of developing effective leadership that will bring about superior performance in organisations.
Ochieng’ O. Oloo, Principal Consultant, Strategic
Dimensions Ltd, Management and Development Consultants
This is a very timely book. We have depended on Western authors for long, so such a resource by one of us on a subject as important as leadership is simply refreshing. I have known the author for over 30 years and he has consistently lived out what he has written in this book. Character-Centred Leadership will prove an invaluable tool for leaders of churches, organisations, businesses and even the civil society organisations. I recommend it highly for any serious leader of this generation.
Rev. Dr MacMillan Kiiru , Leadership and
Management Consultant, Nairobi, Kenya.
The need for leadership to be relevant to the environment it seeks to serve cannot be overstated. The author has provided the reader with a simply written resource, the content of which is far from simplistic. He has skillfully fleshed out the requisite traits of the leader who would be effective in today’s demanding environment. This is a great book for leaders in the making and practising ones.

Foreword
I welcome the pleasant opportunity accorded to me to write this foreword.
To begin with, I congratulate Canon Micah Amukobole for the bold step he has taken to put together a highly illuminating resource for practising and aspiring leaders.
I have heard him tell his personal story as well as observed him lead a reputable pan-African organisation. I have sat and watched him teach young, talented people what good leadership is all about. I have also heard him share his Christian testimony, and hence know that this book is basically about the kind of leadership that he has modelled all along.
One thing sets this book apart and makes it timely: the principles discussed herein are a response to actively listening to the rhythms and challenges of life in Africa, where the search for good leadership has proved elusive. Discussions abound in all settings—family, church, political rallies, etc—as our people studiously seek for the kind of leadership approach that could help our society and earn Africa her place, as there is consensus that those who were expected to do so have failed us.
Canon Amukobole has not shied away from reminding the reader of a certain irrefutable reality: good leadership does not just happen. It has to be learned and systematically practised. Today, we live in a highly competitive society where many embrace the mistaken view that good leadership is synonymous with being vocal and pulling of crowds. This has led to the clouding out of the input of softspoken, timid people whose leadership ideas could be equally good or better.
This book, which is the product of close to 10 years of reflection and debate, is rooted in the commitment to share good leadership skills. It provides the reader with the opportunity to compare their leadership practice and the different approaches suggested in textbooks. In his writing, the author corroborates the continuing debate that leadership needs to be nurtured, that there are attributes of good leadership and that all these take place in a dynamic environment.
Finally, good leadership has to provide for smooth transition through an intentional, systematic process that involves all the stakeholders. Of course good leadership skills are not learned overnight. They must be taught and practised over time before they become part of whoever is meant to apply them.
