Chapter One
Walking up the stairs, picking up toys, costumes, teddies and whatever else my children had brought to their world of fantasy for the day. As I walked down my coffee-cream hallway, I could hear my children playing in the bathroom with their father. It brought a small smile on my face. I walked to the first room on my right. It was my daughter’s room. I placed her pink teddies on her little princess chair, over by her window; it was close to her plastic and, also, pink beauty table. I then went over to her white Chester drawers and pulled out her favourite princess jammies. They had Belle on them, dancing with the Beast. I laid them out on her bed and walked down to the left side to my little demons’ room—two boys about a year apart. I shook my head with a smile as I looked around the room.
It was dark blue, with aeroplanes hanging from the ceiling, with glow-in-the-dark stars plotted everywhere. A big TV planted on the wall, with stacks of games on the left and DVDs on the right. They both had desk bunk beds. Stanley, the oldest, had everything red-themed—sheets, pens and toys—and Victor would have it all in green. They rarely agreed on much. Stanley was the little trouble maker, the little sneak and a little bit of a scraper. Most of the action films and cartoons were on his side of the room. Victor was my little brain box. Underneath his bed, where his desk was, there were stacks of books with bits of paper sticking out from where he had read them. I wondered if he was too smart for his age, but I refused to hold him back at any point. I placed their toys of war under the window, in the black toy chest they had.
“Mummy, Mummy,” I heard a small soft voice; that was Maci calling me. As I walked out into the hall again, she was wandering about in a pink towel. As she saw me, she attempted to run, but the towel got in the way. “I want cuddles,” she said with her skin and hair shining from her bath.
“Well, my princess, you are still soaking wet.” I gave in anyway and picked her up. “You are getting heavy, I must say.” Having her feel almost like deadweight in my arms, I took her straight into her room and closed the door for privacy as she got herself changed. I picked up her towel as she tugged at her clothes. I went to her beauty table and got her hairbrush. “What story would you like tonight?” I said sitting on the end of her bed.
“Mmmm,” she said playfully, putting a finger to her mouth to indicate she was thinking hard.
“ Beauty and the Beast again?” She shook her head. “ Jack and the Beanstalk ?” She shook her head again. “ Cinderella ?” I said with a sigh.
“No, I don’t want any of them,” she said trying to climb on to her bed. I picked her up and placed her in front of me.
“How about a film? The boys are having a film tonight.” I watched her pull a face. “That’s a no then. What do you want, Maci?” I asked, starting to brush her blonde hair. It was just below her shoulder blades.
“Something new.” I look sarcastically at one of her teddies, expecting it to back me up in some way. “What about you and Daddy?” She tilted her head slightly; I put it back into its place.
“What do you mean?” brushing out the final knots in her hair.
“I want to hear about how you and Daddy met and fell in love,” she said lifting her head back to look at me.
“I don’t know, sweetie. I don’t think you’re old enough for that story yet,” I said biting the inside of my lip. Just as she went to speak again, she heard her brothers run down the hall to their bedroom. I called after my husband. “Marko, honey, come here please,” I said just as he went past.
“S’up, babe?” he said popping his bald head around the door.
“She wants to hear about how we met. Do you think she’s old enough?” I asked him.
“Erm, probably not for some of it. Isn’t it a bit long for bedtime?” he said with a confused face. He watched Maci’s face light up.
“You can tell it to me over the next few days, it’ll be great,” she said with a large grin. “And if you don’t think I’m old enough, you can just make it for my age,” she said getting off the bed and moving over to her father.
I gave out a little sigh, “I don’t really have much of a choice, do I?” I watched my daughter shake her head with joy. “Alright, alright. You win, but I’m only telling you some of it tonight, then it’s off to sleep, okay?” I said looking over at Marko to approve. “Hun, once you sort the boys out, do you want to make them all a drink to settle them with?”
“It all sounds good to me.” He came in and placed Maci back into her bed. He kissed me, “Do you want a drink?”
“Please, sweetie,” I said with a warm smile. I then looked at Maci, “Right, where to start?”
Chapter Two
I was 19 years old, somewhat sensible in my own opinion. It was coming to the end of summer, where the weather was just right for everything and clear skies were every day. Orange and brown would fill the tree colours, with only a slight wind to flow through. I was living an hour away from the city. It was handy in seeing my father, but easy enough to get away from the city when it was too overwhelming, which it really was starting to become.
My father had asked me to come down for a few days. He wanted me to meet his new girlfriend and see what I thought of the possible new family member. Even though I had been there for a few days, I hadn’t seen anybody much but him. I hadn’t met his girlfriend yet, and I hadn’t even seen one of my eldest brothers either. I had left his flat a little while ago, to make my way down to one of his local pubs. As I came ’round the corner, I could see the gravel-filled car park—only a few cars were parked up. The rest were motorbikes, also related to my father. Unfortunately, my father was still part of a group of bikers from when he was a teenager. As I walked past, I nodded slightly as I was a well-known face amongst them.
As I walked in, the smell of alcohol and food filled my nostrils and left a slight twinge in my stomach. I scanned the room, trying to find my father. Under my gaze, I saw a group of lads sitting in a corner booth close to the bar. They seemed like a rowdy bunch. Strangely enough, they all looked pretty similar.
They had shaved heads. Some were covered in tattoos; other not so much, just enough to express themselves. They all had at least black jeans or cargos on with what looked like doc martens. Some were wearing white vests, and they all had bomber jackets on them. I shook my head. Maybe it’s what the prospects looked like now. As I moved my gaze, I could see my father at the bar, with my uncle Ian. They were wearing leather waistcoats, with the symbol ‘AA’ on the left shoulder. Underneath was a nickname, and what they were to the group. Most of the jackets were covered in badges of various things. I made my way over, just as my uncle went off.
“Drinking before noon is frowned upon, I’m sure,” I said finally standing in front of him.
“Doll Face,” he said in a merry voice, “Don’t judge; I’m sure you’ve had your fair share of early drinking. You are my daughter after all.” He came at me with a rough hug. As he pulled away, he spoke again, “Your brother won’t be joining us, at least not yet,” he said with a little smile.
“And what does Seth find more important than this?” I said with a sigh. I wasn’t crazy to see my brother, but it would have been nice if the loose cannon of the family would have made an effort.
“He’s dealing with the prospects,” he said taking a swig of his drink with an uninterested tone. I looked over to the bald group of boys in the corner.
