Description

Did you ever wonder why your body works the way it does? Or doesn't? Sometimes it seems like things could have been organized a little more happily. Michael Scherperel's light-hearted set of 21 essays on possible design problems with the human body, Homo Sapiens - Obsolescens?, will take you on a journey from head to toe--well, not quite that far, but pretty close--examining some of the quirks of human construction.

Foreword
There is an old joke about three engineers who were discussing God and debating what sort of engineer He might be.
The mechanical engineer asserts that God, too, is a mechanical engineer. His argument? The wondrous construction of the human skeleton and the way in which it supports the entire, complex structure of the body. The electrical engineer counters that, no, one only has to look at the miracle of the human brain, what complex feats it can perform using bioelectrical mechanisms, to discern that God is an electrical engineer. The civil engineer disputes both of his colleagues. “God,” he proclaims, “is obviously a civil engineer. Who else would run a waste disposal pipeline through a pleasure area.”
This brief tome is a tongue-in-cheek look at some design issues with the human body and, indeed, with some other animals too. Plant life might have figured into this discussion as well, I suppose, but I restrained myself (believe it or not).
