In the movie The Edge , 1997, Charles (played by Anthony Hopkins) says, “We are all put to the test, usually not in the form or at the point we choose.” Indeed. The te s t, in whatever its form, undoubtedly t akes us to our limits—or even beyond them. If you will allow me now, I will take you to your limit (and mine, too)—or even beyond. Why? To reconfigure our souls.
There w as another ch a racter in The Edge named Bob (pl a yed by Alec Baldwin). The movie goes something l ike thi s : C h arles and Bob get into a jam. Charles saves Bob's life. Bob tries to kill Charles. Y o u see, Bob held to some envy r e g ar ding Charles. And even though Charles saved Bob's life (at the li m it), Bob's soul was not reconfigured. The envy still lay at the root of him. So, even the saving of life was not enough to reconfi g ure a soul. What is then?
In a way T h e Edge represents the story of go o d and evil. Didn't Cain kill Abel out of envy? “Why do you get to have w h at I want?” says envy. Oh, but aren't some of us righteous, you ask. Is it righteous for the Christian to put his or her own salvati o n before others? Is it righteous for the Jew t o claim chosen s t atus before o the r s? Is it righteous for the Muslim to claim “God is great” while demanding others b e lie v e as he or s h e doe s ? Is it righ te ous for the mini s ters to ta k e y our money for the pr o mise of a better life i n the hereafter? Is it righteous for the politicians to take your money for the promise of a b etter life n ow? Is it righteous for you to make excuses for the Bobs’ (or Cains’) of the wo r ld?
For many y ears, I ha v e struggled with this iss u e of good and e v il. I suppose I thought that a certain understanding would suffice to reconfigure a so u l. But how can that be when the saving o f a life is not even enough? I have seen people “get it,” in new age p ar l ance. I have seen p e ople converted—a c tu a lly having t he expe
