Introduction

Aquaponics is a food production system that is increasingly being utilized by people all over the world. This farming technique is a sustainable and environmentally friendly form of agriculture that combines the raising of aquatic animals such as crawfish and snails with conventional hydroponic farming techniques. With an aquaponics system, the water that is used and circulated in an aquaculture system can build up toxicity due to the waste by-products excreted by fish. This water is fed into the hydroponic system where waste is broken down by the nitrogen that is present in the plant life in the form of nitrates and nitrites and the water is recirculated back into the entire system.
The concept of aquaponics in an ancient system of farming that dates back to the Aztec and Asian cultures. These systems are versatile and highly adaptable and can be utilized in a variety of situations, whether for single family use or to feed entire communities.
