They are a very small, early variety, and when eaten just at the right time, are very passable. Pears, too, are now coming in; those hard, granular, indigestible things you have seen, called the Chinese Sand Pear. As an ornamental tree it has its uses, but as a fruit it can not be recommended. Large quantities of them are consumed by the people. Different sorts are cultivated, one of which keeps all through the winter and spring following.
