1: General Facts Squid Game is a South Korean TV series conceptualized and created by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Netflix. Revolving around a survival contest in which 456 players compete to win a cash prize, its title is based on a Korean children’s game called ojingeo (which translates to ‘squid’ in English). This is reflected in the premise of the series, in which deadly versions of children’s games are presented to the reluctant participants. Netflix initially referred to the series as Round Six , the title they originally wanted the series to have on release. However, Hwang’s insistence that the series should be called Squid Game eventually convinced them otherwise. Squid Game was released worldwide on the 17 th September 2021. Netflix arranged for it to be advertised on their platform’s top banner across multiple national zones. The budget for the first series as approved by Netflix was US$21.4 million. Netflix licensed the release of four trailers to advertise the series, all of which helped to generate excitement for the premiere episode, particularly through YouTube as well as Netflix’s own preview service.
