Foreword
Magic is one of the most ancient performing arts. Over the centuries, it has undergone many changes in presentation and style, to the level it has reached today.
The Shamaans, Witch Doctors and Tribal Chiefs of ancient times used the principles of Magic in some form or the other to wield power, awe their tribe or congregation, or to kill chid cure. In each case, it was an attempt to create an impression of supernatural powers, in fact, achieved by perfectly normal and natural means.
Over the centuries, Magic had developed into a more respectable and socially acceptable form of entertainment. It has all the ingredients of good entertainment, mystery and wonder, laughter and a sense of the impossible happening, or dreams coming true.
When cinema was invented. Magic and live-variety-entertainment took a back seat. Big-stage-Magic-shows around the world faded away, because it was possible to create more impossibilities on a two-dimensional screen, and materialise more fantasies than is possible in real life.
Today, with the proliferation of video, cinema is fast losing its novelty, and people are once again hankering for live entertainment. Magic affords more varietyand novelty than any other form of entertainment. Whether it is a hobbyist showing Magic tricks at an informal gathering to his friends, or a huge stage show. Magic, well performed, can make a greater impact than any other entertainment art form. The top entertainment act in the world today is the Magic act of Siegfried and Roy, with a drawing power of millions of Dollars a month.
For the thousands of budding magicians being born everyday, knowledge is essential. The tricks and principles of Magic encompass every known field of human knowledge, from early sciences like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Biology and Psychology, to the latest of scientific curiosities and discoveries.
It requires a good teacher to impart some of this knowledge. Mr. Pattabhi Ram has authored an excellent series of articles in the Indian Express, teaching some of the secrets of this art. He has written ‘Magic for Fun’, which is an excellent book for a newcomer to this art.
Now he has written this book ‘Magic for Children’ to impart even more of this fascinating art.
Whether you are a beginner, looking for something to amuse and entertain your friends, or a professional looking for a few ideas for off-the-cuff impromptu use, there is something of value you will find in this book.
There has been a long held concept amongst professional magicians that if a single trick can be used from a book, the price of the book is well justified. I am sure every reader will find that the contents of this book justify its price a hundred times over. Have fun!

Yes! You are a Magician!
It is my foremost duty to express deep gratitude to countless teenagers, adults and amateur magicians who have inspired me to produce another volume on magic, after my earlier book ‘Magic For fun’
The primary purpose of this book is to develop scientific thought by dispelling superstitions in the minds of the people about this great art, as until recently, magic has been viewed as a technique applied only in a mysterious background by people with strange powers, special skills, sixth sense, psychic and supernatural powers. Few people have realised that magic is in no way connected with black magic, witchcraft, sorcery, nacromancy and other so-called evil powers which are just imaginary and baseless illusions. The chemical tricks given in every page beneath a particular illustration will expose the tricks of the so-called sorcerors.
Magic, the art of deception, has not lagged behind. Like other arts, it has made great strides during this century in India. New and brilliant tricks have been devised. Improved methods have been invented. ‘Magic for Children’ is designed to give a description of the latest novelties and up-to-date methods.
I am grateful to Shri Sam Dalai, an eminent engineer-turned magician and renowned magic dealer, for his kind foreword. My thanks are due to Indian Express for publishing these tricks in its weekend magazines. I also have to record my sincere thanks to the publishers for bringing out this book in such a beautiful get-up. Of course, it is their magic!
Lastly, but not in the least, I have to record my thanks to my postman who is carrying bundles of letters from my magic fans with a smile and delivering me. He promised to continue to have the smile on his face. Therefore, my friends, do not hesitate to write for any suggestion or a piece of advice.
Okay! Now, it’s time for magic

Topsy-Turvy Match

Props : A match box. blade, cello tape.
MAGIC : Of all drawing room tricks, this one with matches is universally propular. A match box is something available in every home and several tricks can be performed with this simple accessory.
Show an ordinary match box, open it about half an inch and place it on the table. Spectators will find all the match sticks in it. Now shut the box, turn it over five or six times and ask them : ‘Which way is up now?’ Anybody will answer immediately as there is a label on the top. When they say ‘it is upside down’, open the box and show them the sticks. If they say It is the right way ‘, open it and show the tray upside down. This can be repeated any number of times. Every time they will fail to find out which side is the right way.
SECRET : This item needs prior preparation. Remove the tray from the box and empty it. Now carefully cut it in half with a blade. Then turn one half upside down and join the half trays together with cello tape. Finally keep the matches in the magic tray, and replace it inside the box. Now you can perform miracles. But always keep this in mind. You should open the tray only about one inch.
