FOREWORD

None of this would have been possible had it not been for Fred

Eyre telling Bobby Smith, the then Bury Manager, about my

achievements at Northern Nomads. To this day I will never

forget the faith that Fred showed in me and we still remain

good friends.

When I arrived at Bury, as I have said Bobby Smith was the

Manager who gave me the opportunity to play for this great

club. I was thrust straight into the Reserve Team who played

in the old Central League. I played along side a lot of young

players and also established pros. I remember for the first

time in my career only feeling nervous at Coventry but all that

anxiety was eased when I scored the only goal in a 1-0 win.

The one thing that sticks out in my mind about that game was

receiving a dressing down off the Manager for turning up in a

T-Shirt and not wearing a Shirt and Tie.

The late great Bob Stokoe gave me my first team debut

away at Chesterfield. After that first game I went on to play

with many great players - Danny Wilson, Neville Southall, Lee

Dixon - to name but a few who all went on to play for their

respective Countries. My great memories were playing alongside Stevie Johnson and Wayne Entwistle who were a great help in me scoring so many goals. During my time at Bury I played for Bobby Smith, Bob Stokoe, Dave Hatton, Dave Connor, Jim Illey and Martin

Dobson. In my early years at the Club Dave Connor showed so

much faith in me and helped me achieve many great things. I

have many fond memories of playing for this fantastic football

club and I am still very proud to be the club's record goal scorer. I am sure this book compiled by Chris Cowlin and John

Northcutt will be a much enjoyed test for Bury fans both of the older generation and the younger supporters and will provide many interesting debates.

FOREWORD

In 1993, I was signed for Bury Football Club from Halifax Town by the then manager Mike Walsh for £50,000. I loved

every minute of my time playing for ‘The Shakers’.

I personally had probably the best spell of my career at Bury

Football Club. A great moment was reaching the ‘Play-Off

Final’ against Chesterfield at Wembley, but a devastating loss.

The year after we got promoted on the final day of the season

to League One, this was another great night celebrating with

families, players and fans around the town. The year after, we

won promotion to the now ‘Championship’ as title winners, again a fantastic achievement for the club. To lift the Championship Trophy was unbelievable under Stan Ternent. The year after we stayed up in the ‘Championship’ at the expense of clubs like Manchester City! The fact is, we knew we were a small club in terms of support, seemed to ‘knit’ us together and we had a “them against us mentality”, for me personally, receiving three successive ‘Player of Season’ awards, the promotions, playing

Manchester United in the Cup and Sunderland away in front

of fifty odd thousand people was a part of my life I will never forget! Unfortunately after our relegation from the Championship,

the club sold me to Huddersfield Town for a fee worth £1 million.

In short, great times, great club and great people! This book

is a great read and will be a great test for fans of all ages.

INTRODUCTION

I would first of all like to thank Craig Madden and Chris Lucketti for writing the forewords to this book. I am very grateful for their help on this project. I would also like to thank all the newspapers and radio stations for their comments and reviews on this book (these

can be found at the back of the book).

I would also like to thank Peter Young and Gordon Sorfleet at Bury Football Club for their help during the books compilation. A special mention of thanks must go to Michael

Curtis, Bury’s head groundsman, for checking the book so it is error free! I hope you enjoy this book. Hopefully it should bring back

some wonderful memories!

It was interesting working with John Northcutt for the first

time, between us I hope we have given you a selection of easy,

medium and hard questions.

In closing, I would like to thank all my friends and family for

encouraging me to complete this book.
