y name is Abi Patten and I’m a tiedyer living in the beautiful M countryside of County Durham in the northeast of England, UK with my partner, Paul, and our three cats, Marshall, Patsy and Snoopy.
I’m better known under my business name of ‘AbiDashery’, and I have been a tiedyer and upcycler full time for the last nine years. I always wanted to make a living from doing what I loved, but I never had the courage to actually take that leap. When I found myself unemployed in 2014, I knew this was the opportunity I had dreamt of – to carve my own ‘road less travelled’, allowing me to live more independently and to make my living doing something creative. Tie dyeing had been a hobby, so I turned it into a living and started my online store, Abidashery.com, which is still going strong today. You can follow my journey on Instagram, at @ abi_dashery.
Born and raised in the city, in 2020 my partner and I also finally took the decision to stop talking about our dreams of rural living and make them come true by escaping to the country! Now I am fortunate enough to be around nature all the time, and I’m happily able to work outside most days (British weather permitting). Part of the reason I wanted to move to the countryside in the first place was so I could live a more sustainable lifestyle. My partner and I enjoy making or upcycling things ourselves rather than buying them new, and prefer to use nature and its bounty where possible, which ties in nicely with the theme of this book.
Like me, you as a reader are probably conscious of the environment as well as interested in fashion, and would like to create your own unique, ecoconscious clothing on a budget. Tie dye is something anyone can do, whatever their previous crafting experience, and with little equipment needed. The projects in this book give you the opportunity to revamp and recycle your existing wardrobe, which is much kinder to the planet than adding to the 350,000 tonnes of textiles that goes into landfill each year in the UK.
This book includes a range of tiedye techniques that you can follow to make a unique collection of clothing and accessories, as well as extra instructions to make your own dyes at home if you choose to, from items you may already have in your kitchen cupboard. The projects and examples in this book are a way for you to learn both the basic and more advanced techniques of tie dye, before using those techniques as inspiration to create your own individual projects in the future. If you want to learn the secrets to making the tiedye designs you’re seeing trending on the internet right now, then you’re in the right place.
Tie dye is such an enjoyable craft to learn but the most important thing to remember is that it is an organic process – you can control the colours and the method of tying you choose but when it comes to the results, no two pieces will ever be exactly the same, just like us. So, don’t be rigid in your thinking when you’re tie dyeing; trust the process and know that, however it turns out, it will be both beautiful and exactly as it was meant to be. Let go, go with the flow and enjoy seeing how things turn out. I think that’s a pretty good lesson for life too!
