Acknowledgments
T he gestation period of any book involves the contributions of many, many people. For this book, much credit is due to Cindy Kitchel, who kindly gave me my first job in publishing and continues to inspire me with her poise, humor, and smarty-pantsness. Cindy also doubled on this project as a stunt stitcher, for which I am incredibly grateful. Roxane Cerda, my acquisitions editor, has crossed the line from client to friend; her contributions to this title span from moral support to project designs. And it goes without saying that project editor Donna Wright s encouragement, suggestions, and patience throughout have proved invaluable. Thanks are also due to Christina Stambaugh, who provided design direction; designer Elizabeth Brooks; layout technician Amanda Spagnuolo; graphics imaging technician Brent Savage; proofreader Betty Kish; indexer Lynnzee Elze and Carol Pogoni, the book s copy editor, who saved my ass on numerous occasions.
Then, of course, there are those people who had the unfortunate luck to live with or otherwise encounter me during the writing process, most notably my amazing and supportive husband, Ian, who always makes me feel smart and beautiful, even when I totally am not; and my brilliant, hilarious, and gorgeous six-year-old daughter, Heidi. Thanks also to the rest of the fam: Barbara Shoup (who, in addition to birthing me, also stunt-stitched for this book), Steve Shoup, Jenny Shoup, Jake Plant, Jim Plant, the Pfeiffers, the Weitz boys, the Goodales, the Caudells, Sue Welsh, Jay Welsh, Rae Terry, Caitlin Welsh, and Tommy Grim. No girl could ask for nicer relatives. Super special appreciation to Joan Warrick, whose skills as a seamstress are trumped only by her skills as a friend. Finally, undying gratitude to a few key members of my buddy list: Dan Barden, Sol Blickman, Kate Bova, Sally Chalex, the Cupps, the Other Cupps, the Dellingers, Betsy Haas, Heather Hauptman, Waddy Potthoff, the Snidermans, Bill Warrick, the girls of the DKG (especially Kitty Jarrett, yet another stunt stitcher), and the Friday Night Yogis. Thanks for tolerating me.
Introduction

The Stitch Is Back
Stitch Hunt
Meet Rosey Grier, who, after being introduced to the joys of needlepoint in the early 1970s, quickly developed a passion for it. Luckily, Rosey had plenty of time to devote to the craft, having retired in 1967 after a successful career as wait for it . . . a pro defensive tackle in the NFL. If anyone thought Rosey Grier was a girly man for publicly practicing needlepoint-hell, he even published a book about it, Rosey Grier s Needlepoint for Men -they probably kept it to themselves.
As it happens, Rosey wasn t the first person to develop a keen interest in needlework. In fact, needlecrafts have been around practically since Neanderthals roamed Earth. But although needlework-a.k.a. stitching -has enjoyed a long history, it all but died out during the first half of the 20th century. And unfortunately, in the years following its revival in the 1960s, the majority who joined the stitching bandwagon (Rosey Grier notwithstanding) either a) collected Hummel figurines, b) believed that showering was for the bourgeoisie , c) participated in Renaissance festivals, or d) all of the above. That is, they weren t chic, like you.
Recently, that s begun to change, thanks to a spike in interest among hip types in needlecrafts like embroidery, cross stitch, and needlepoint, which are the foci of this book. Indeed, needlecrafts have become cool. And of course, like many cool things-shoes come to mind-needlecrafts are also addictive. For one, the thread used in stitching is soft and colorful, and everyone knows that handling soft, colorful objects is habit-forming. Plus, stitching can provide an immediate rush. Forget knitting. Making a single sweater takes longer than growing out a bad haircut. With stitching, you can crank out some of the simpler pieces in the time it takes to refresh your highlights. Finally, after a long day earning 22 percent less than your male counterpar
