The Facts
Shawn Michaels
1. Michael Shawn Hickenbottom, better known as Shawn Michaels, is one of the greatest professional wrestlers ever to grace a World Wrestling Federation (WWF) or World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) ring. He was born on 22 July 1965 in Chandler, Arizona. Shawn, known as “The Heartbreak Kid,” embarked on what proved to be a glittering WWF/WWE career in 1988 and first came to prominence at the 1992 Royal Rumble when he lasted in the ring for 15 minutes and 46 seconds. At Royal Rumble 1994 he finished in third place behind co-winners Bret “Hitman” Hart and Lex Luger (real name, Lawrence Wendell “Larry” Pfohl). In 1995, he entered the Royal Rumble as the No.1 entrant and amazingly was the last man standing at the end of the 30-man contest thereby becoming the first ever wire-to-wire winner of the event after eliminating The British Bulldog (Chris Benoit repeated this feat at Royal Rumble 2004). He retained his Royal Rumble crown the following year. On 31 March 1996, Michaels achieved his boyhood dream of becoming World Wrestling Federation Champion after defeating Bret “Hitman” Hart in extra-time of their 60 minute (Iron Man Match at WrestleMania XII (the score was 0-0 after the regulation 1 hour time for the match). A serious injury to his back in 1998 resulted in announcing his retirement for the first time. However, to the amazement of many in WWE, he returned to the ring four years later and the following year he competed at the 2003 Royal Rumble. In 2007, he nearly won his third Royal Rumble but in the end he was no match for the power of The Undertaker. The Heartbreak Kid holds the record for eliminating the most wrestlers from the ring in the history of Royal Rumble with a staggering 38 (includes the 2011 Royal Rumble) and on the all-time list of most time spent in the ring at Royal Rumble he occupies second place with a total in-ring time of 3 hours and 42 minutes. During his career Shawn won the World Championship 4 times, the WWF Championship 3 times and also claimed the World Heavyweight Championship. He also won the coveted Professional Wrestling Illustrated Match of the Year Award 11 times (he enjoyed a 4-year Pro Wrestling Illustrated (PWI) award winning streak from 1993 to 1996 and then had a 7-year winning streak from 2004 to 2010). In 2011, Shawn was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and at the induction ceremony WWE paid tribute to one of their greatest ever competitors by saying: “In an industry where hyperbole is the norm, there may not be enough ways to describe the greatness of Shawn Michaels. He is considered by many of his peers to be the most talented performer to ever set foot inside a ring.” Since 2012, Shawn has served in an ambassadorial role for WWE. Every sport has one truly outstanding superstar and in WWE that superstar is Shawn Michaels.
Rey Mysterio
2. Óscar Gutiérrez, better known as Rey Mysterio, was trained to be a wrestler by his uncle, Rey Mysterio Snr., and during his early career he wrestled in Mexico where he learned the “Lucha Libre” high flying wrestling style that has become his famous trademark. He made his debut when he was only 14-years old in Mexico on 30 April 1989. He is a devoted Roman Catholic and has a number of religious tattoos on his body including a cross on his chest attached to rosaries plus other crosses and allusions to God. He is best known for wearing bright coloured masks in the ring and for his famous finishing move, the 619.
Edge
3. Edge (real name, Adam Copeland) and Kurt Angle are the only two wrestlers who have held every currently active male Championship title in WWE. In addition to his 31 WWE Championship titles, Edge also won the 2001 King of the Ring tournament, the inaugural Money in the Bank ladder match in 2005 and the 2010 Royal Rumble match making him the only wrestler in WWE history to achieve this unique treble of titles.
Hulk Hogan
4. Hulk Hogan, born Terry Gene Bollea on 11 August 1953 in Augusta, Georgia, is perhaps the greatest professional wrestler the sport has ever seen. He began his professional wrestling career on 10 th August 1977 and during his star-studded career in the ring he won the Royal Rumble in 1990 and then defended it the following year (in his four appearances at the Royal Rumble, 1990-93, he eliminated 27 wrestlers); he was the 12-times World Heavyweight Champion, 6-times WWF/WWE Champion, 6-times World Championship Wrestling (WCW) World Heavyweight Champion and he won the WWE World Tag Team Championship with Edge. In his first reign as WCW World Heavyweight Champion he held the title for 469 days (17 th July 1994 to 29 th October 1995) which is the longest reign of all time for this Championship. He was also the first WWE wrestler to win the WWE Championship on three occasions. In 2005 he was fittingly inducted to the WWE Hall of Fame.
Real Names
5. WrestleMania XIX witnessed the first main event at WrestleMania to feature two wrestlers using their real names, Kurt Angle versus Brock Lesnar. It took place on 30 March 2003 at Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington. Angle won the WWE Championship title three months prior to WrestleMania XIX at Armageddon (held on 15 December 2002 at The Office Depot Centre, Fort Lauderdale, Florida) by defeating the defending Champion, The Big Show, with the help of Lesnar. However, at WrestleMania XIX Lesnar beat Angle to win the WWE Championship.
The Youngest Champion in the History of WWE
6. René Goguen, better known as René Dupree, is a French-Canadian professional wrestler and is the youngest Champion in the history of WWE. In partnership with Sylvain Grenier as the tag team, La Résistance, they won the World Tag Team Championship on 15 June 2003 in Houston, Texas. He also won the WWE Tag Team Championship with Kenzo Suzuki on 7 December 2004 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
