Description

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book.
Sample Book Insights:
#1 The membership is not pleased with the changes, and want heads to roll. The kids are running through the lobby in bathing suits, and the owners are not fans of the resort or the club.
#2 The NFL’s winter meetings should take place about an hour north of Miami. The Breakers in Palm Beach is the league’s first choice, but it’s not close enough to the water. As tycoons, they consider themselves pillars of their communities.
#3 The NFL’s annual meetings, as well as the league’s overall success, convey a sense of the organization’s permanence. The league’s owners, the Membership, are a disparate group of Roman-like figures who view themselves as noble stewards of their communities.
#4 The NFL also has meetings between the Super Bowl and the NFL Draft, which are the first official events of the new NFL year. The Shield, which stands for big notions like Respect, Resiliency, and Integrity, is a symbol of almost mystical power.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The membership is not pleased with the changes, and want heads to roll. The kids are running through the lobby in bathing suits, and the owners are not fans of the resort or the club.

#2

The NFL’s winter meetings should take place about an hour north of Miami. The Breakers in Palm Beach is the league’s first choice, but it’s not close enough to the water. As tycoons, they consider themselves pillars of their communities.

#3

The NFL’s annual meetings, as well as the league’s overall success, convey a sense of the organization’s permanence. The league’s owners, the Membership, are a disparate group of Roman-like figures who view themselves as noble stewards of their communities.

#4

The NFL also has meetings between the Super Bowl and the NFL Draft, which are the first official events of the new NFL year. The Shield, which stands for big notions like Respect, Resiliency, and Integrity, is a symbol of almost mystical power.

#5

The NFL has become so self-serious that even embarrassing incidents, like the Deflategate scandal, can provide entertainment that diverts from the Super Bowl’s main issue: concussions.

#6

Greed is usually a topic of conversation among NFL owners, but the conversation is usually rhetorical. Is it worth more pie to the league for a franchise to rip the hearts out of some of the most devout fans in the country to grab a much sweeter deal in Las Vegas.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The venue in Boca Raton, Florida, was suboptimal. It could be loud, which was a problem given the owners needed hushed conversations.

#2

Mark Davis, the owner of the Raiders, is also looking to move his team out of Oakland. He is a free agent and ready to roam. He is currently exploring the possibility of moving the team to Las Vegas or St. Louis.

#3

The moving gallery behind Davis laughed, except the intrepid St. Louis reporter. St. Louis doesn’t have enough of a Raiders image. he said, a little sadly. It has beautiful land, a nice stadium.

#4

The league also has a strange membership process, with old money and new, recovered drug addicts, and even convicted criminals.

#5

The NFL’s oligarchic theme park is on full display at the annual league meeting. The event is open to all branches of the family, and even Dr. Elliot Pellman, the league’s go-to concussion denier for many years.

#6

At the reception, I avoided two people: Tony Wyllie, the head of communications for the Washington Redskins, and Roger Goodell. Wyllie had arranged a brief interview for me with Redskins owner Dan Snyder, and Goodell had been receiving a lot of criticism.

#7

I spoke with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, and his wife, Jane Skinner Goodell, who was head of public policy and government affairs. She insisted that the tattoo on Roger's butt was off the record.
