Disclaimer and a little housekeeping
My name is Nick Aldis. To some of you, I will be better known as the characters I have played on TV, like Magnus from TNA Impact Wrestling or Oblivion from Gladiators . But I m also a magazine columnist, I ve been lifting weights since I was 12, and I ve dedicated my life to the pursuit of physical and mental improvement through diet and exercise.
When I say superstar body , I don t mean here s how to look like a pro wrestler. Everybody is different, and we are all free to choose how we want to look. I chose not to be skinny anymore, to have a muscular athletic body that opened doors for my career, commanded respect and made me feel more attractive to the opposite sex (more on that later). You might not want to be as big, allowing you more mobility and endurance in your chosen sports; you may want to be bigger than I am. You may want to be ripped to shreds with tons of definition and those all-important six-pack abdominals. Or if you re female, you may want sexy and defined legs and buttocks and a slimmer waist. Whatever the case, I want you to get there. I want you to look in the mirror at your body and feel awesome. I want you to be able to dress your body up and present it in a way that makes you radiate confidence and makes people notice you.
I want you to feel like a superstar.
There will be brief moments during this book where I ll talk about my career in wrestling, my time as a Gladiator or even my early life. If so, it s for the purpose of describing how my life shaped my body and vice versa. But this is not an autobiography; it s a fitness and nutrition book. Quite frankly, who wants to hear the life story of a guy who isn t even 30? The main reason I have included a few autobiographical accounts is so you, the reader, can get a glimpse of my experience in that life and understand the personality behind this book. There s also a practical reason; all too often I read fitness books and the authors omit their real life, which to me makes it hard to relate to the advice. If you re going to master your own superstar body, you have to master your personality; embrace who you are and what drives you. With that being said, I promise I won t talk about myself too much!
There will be times in the book where I talk about certain foods, supplements and products. I don t want you to feel like I m subliminally trying to sell you anything, so I want to be 100% honest from the beginning. As of this writing, I have sponsorships with Bulletproof Nutrition and Natural Stacks. I don t receive any money from them, just a steady supply of great supplements and foods. I have also received some freebies from the generous folks at P28 Foods and Lo-Back Trax. I will give an honest recommendation where I see fit, whether it s a company I have a relationship with or not. Nobody has paid me to feature their products in the book, or even discussed the possibility with me.
I opted not to fill this book with pictures of me performing exercise demonstrations. In the modern era, almost anyone likely to read this is familiar with the vast majority of the exercises described. However, if at any time you feel like a refresher, or you are uncertain about a certain exercise, you can check out www.EXRX.net , a great site with a huge glossary of exercises and moving GIFS of almost all of them. This site, and all others described in this book can be linked to from the Superstar Body Website www.superstarbodybook.com and as always, if you are uncertain, please don t be foolish, ask for help and consult a qualified trainer.
Prologue
January 31st, 2014: The TNA Impact Wrestling event was in full flow, and after appearing in the first segment of the TV show, in a face-to-face war of words with MVP, I rushed back to the dressing room to put on my brand new gear that Jolene, the seamstress that makes all my wrestling attire, had made for me; a black with gold and silver trim version of my existing trunks and knee pad covers. I had waited until this night to debut the new attire, as this was a big night for me, and for my opponent, Chad Lail, better known as Gunner. For me, it was the first time that a British wrestler would defend a world title of a major US promotion in the UK. For Gunner, it was his first real main event with a lot of focus and time dedicated to the match and to him. He knew he had to deliver. But more importantly to both of us, it was our chance to represent the new generation of talent and the portion of young hungry guys in the dressing room who were counting on us to show that we were ready to lead a promotion.
It had been a brutal day; we were already all running on empty after a lack of sleep coming off back-to-back shows in Dublin and Glasgow, which included a 4am wake-up call to make our 6am flight. Then I had willed myself to get up early to have breakfast with my brother Ed, his wife Louisa and my two-year-old nephew Pepe. It was the only chance I was going to get to see them for probably a year.
With a ladder match earlier in the night, numerous backstage segments to shoot, and in-ring promos to think about, Gunner and I hadn t had much time to discuss anything, and by the time I was dressed for our match, we were both getting antsy; we had about 45 minutes to prepare for a match that was going to receive a lot of focus and had the potential to make or break us in a political, cut-throat industry where there is always a plethora of established guys just waiting for you to screw it up so they can move into the top spot. Every opponent I had wrestled since becoming champion had been way more established than me, so despite the ratings going up (their best in two years) the credit always naturally falls with the bigger name. This match would be the first opportunity I had to go out and tear the house down with a guy who was less established than me and make him look like a star, something I took seriously as a performer and as world champion, as I believe that is the key responsibility of being champion. I also respected Chad and wanted him to be right up there with me in the main event picture.
We discussed the match with our agent, Al Snow, and our referee, Brian Hebner. The exhaustion, nerves and frustration were taking their toll. We were fried. We were both drawing mental blanks and stumbling over our thoughts until we were both getting angry and exasperated. Al was doing his best to help us keep it together and Brian was sitting pensively, waiting for his key points. A referee is so vital in matches like this and Brian is the guy I want before anyone else. Finally I just had to mentally re-set.
All right, Chad, let s just stop for a second. Start again, you have your big stuff, we ve got the back end laid out. We ve got the finish. If you trust me, let me take care of the front end of the match out there, do you trust me?
Of course, man, Gunner replied.
OK, in the first half we re going to trust our instincts and go back to basics. You re awesome, I ve got plenty of
