Description

Originally published in the early 1900s, this extremely rare early work on the Rat is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. READ COUNTRY BOOKS have now republished it, using the original text and illustrations. The author was an acknowledged expert upon pests and their extinction. He was also a member of the London College of Pestology and was instrumental with others in placing a "Bill for Rat Destruction" before Parliament in 1908. This important book on Rats and their control, consists of one hundred and seventeen pages containing seventeen Detailed chapters and a number of vintage illustrations: History of the Rat. Species of Rats, Voles and Mice. Description of Same. The Domestic Mouse and How to Deal with It. Habits of the Rat, and its Fecundity. Waste of Food, and Damage Caused by Rats. The Rat as a Carrier of Disease and a Menace to Health. Natural Enemies of the Rat. The Rodier System. How to Kill Rats. Stopping. Flooding and Smoking. Ferreting. Trapping. Poisons. Bacterial Cultures. Rats on the Estate, Farm, and in Outbuildings. Rats in Shops, Factories, Warehouses and Dwellings. Rats in Sewers. Rats on Board Ships. Suggested Measures. Deratisation. Also retained are numerous original adverts for Traps, Poisons, Rat Lime and Rat Varnish, Baits and other requisites for the destruction of the rat. This is a fascinating read for any pest control enthusiast or naturalist historian, with much of the information remaining practical and useful today. Many of the earlier Natural History and Rural books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. READ COUNTRY BOOKS are republishing many of these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Fred Griffiths, Esq., Lockhill Hall, Ashcott, writes: The results are wonderful . . . nearly a hundred rats with two tins. Neighbouring farmers are sending for supplies. Messrs. E. Bacon Co., Ltd., write: The results have been truly amazing . . . it seems possible that rats on the Grimsby Fish Docks might be almost exterminated. It is the finest rat catching material we have ever experienced and we have tried a good many.
Tins at 1/6 (for one trap) 216 (3 traps) and 14/6 (20 traps) at chemists, ironmongers or (postage 6d extra) from the Sole Makers: KAY BROTHERS Ltd., Manufacturing Chemists, Stockport .
DAK Ratlime will quickly trap the rats and mice which feed, breed and plunder at your expense.
Spread on a sheet of cardboard or tin, this amazingly tenacious birdlime ensnares the wiliest and holds the strongest as easily as a sticky flypaper traps flies. Read the letters quoted. Quite frankly nobody now denies that the various types of insects that make man their host, can and do carry the possibility of lingering illness.
If any doubt existed, Mr. Justice Swift s classification of Bugs as dangerous insects capable of causing assessable injury should dissipate that doubt.
But the point is would you willingly offer yourself as a meal to a disease-carrying, germ-laden insect?
You should know and know quite well that these horrors cannot be confined to their incubating grounds-Slums and the like.
Would you allow your child to play on a grass plot lately the bed of a vermin-ridden tramp for example?
Would you willingly allow a flea from a cancerous or tuberculous person access to you or to your children?
Flies are harbingers of death, and should not be tolerated by a sane people. We have taught this since 1908.
Fabulous sums of money are lost every year through Rat and Mouse depredation. Cockroaches cost thousands of pounds, Furniture Mite is a nightmare; it is a matter of life and death that is now the issue between man and his insect foes, and we can support this assertion by unchallengeable statistics.
It is not the other fellow s business, it is your business, and we invite you to co-operate with those whose voluntary work on your behalf is already substantial, in safeguarding your home, your kith and kin, and all you hold dear by co-operating with us
It is no use being squeamish in these matters, the evils exist and they have got to be tackled, and it is the College of Pestology
