Walking San Francisco’s 49 Mile Scenic Drive shows how walking―rather than driving―San Francisco’s famous scenic route gives you an active, fun way to enjoy and fall in love with the most beautiful city in the world. Get to know the City by the Bay as you never have before with this full color guidebook, which provides 17 bite-size walks, each complete with turn-by-turn instructions, maps, and historical facts and information. Get up close and personal with the most popular visitor locations in San Francisco, and explore the little known neighborhoods that the locals enjoy: Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, the Cliff House, Ocean Beach, Twin Peaks, Mission Dolores, even the Ferry Building and AT&T Park.
Walking San Francisco’s 49 Mile Scenic Drive, written by two San Francisco "insiders," includes detailed maps, points of interest, info on bus routes and parking, recommendations for visiting "hidden gems" and must-see museums, plus plenty of tips and stats to help walkers, such as step counts and mile distances, hill steepness rating, weather tips, and more. Along with the 17 well-crafted primary walks, the book also offers fantastic bonus hikes through beaches, parks, stunning oceanside cliffs, and historic neighborhoods.

COMMENTS ABOUT THE 17 WALKS IN THIS BOOK
This fun, well-informed book breaks the city down into 17 different curated walks, each of which offers fascinating perspectives on the many worlds of San Francisco.
Gary Kamiya, author of Cool Gray City of Love: 49 Views of San Francisco
Love it! There is no place like home, especially if home is the overwhelmingly gorgeous San Francisco! This book is a must read-the excited joy of it all is worth every second and makes a visit to San Francisco an unforgettable must do!
Angela M. Alioto, Esq., past member San Francisco Board of Supervisors
Poggioli and Eidson s Walking San Francisco s 49 Mile Scenic Drive pulls one out of his or her car or home and compels walking to the splendid sites that are illustrated in the book. The text is crisp and the production of the book superb-a must for Bay Area explorers as well as tourists.
Charles A. Fracchia, author, lecturer, founder of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society
Enticing photos, images and fun facts make me want to lace up my shoes and get walking!
Janet McBride, Executive Director, Bay Area Ridge Trail
I took my daughter on the Fisherman s Wharf Walk. During the walk, and then again at bedtime, she said, Mom, I had a really good time. (I don t hear that a lot from my tween!)
Shannon Martinez - Pacifica, CA
A few months after walking Walk 1 I was back in the area with a friend telling him all the cool facts I d learned - like Little Saigon, the Phoenix Motel, etc. He was so impressed and asked how I knew so much. I said, Well there s a new book out . . .
James Camarillo - San Francisco, CA
The whole area on the east side of 101 was new to us. Didn t know a pre-quake neighborhood even existed. Love 24th Street on the loop back with all the trees and small businesses. Can t wait to do all 17 walks.
Don Martin - Oakland, CA
We saw a lot more walking than driving or riding a bike would allow. And we took the time to wander in and out of places that were open (Asian Art Museum and St Mary s) and discovered all kinds of new things.
Jeff Becker - Oakland, CA
Thank you for exposing us to this incredible walk!!! What a wonderful experience, one I had never done end to end on foot! Loved it!!!
Paul Stoner Abraham Hanif - San Jose, CA
I m really working on walking in conjunction with Weight Watchers. That, combined with my general nerdiness and fascination with San Francisco history, makes this a favorite thing for me to do.
Amy Johnson - San Francisco, CA
My sweetie and I took the Golden Gate Park Walk today. It was a beautiful day and we really enjoyed the journey and the fun facts!
Deborah Schweizer - San Francisco, CA
I can t tell you how fun this was and what a good time I had. The book is TERRIFIC. I can hardly wait to do more of these walks. I loved all the tidbits of information you gathered and feel like I know this beautiful city so much better now.
Scott Walton - San Francisco, CA
What fun. We enjoyed our stroll and were surprised to discover so many things that we didn t know were there!
Dave Feldman Vin Eiamvuthikorn - Daly City, CA
Just did Walk 13 - Twin Peaks. That was an awesome walk!
Michael Hamlin - San Francisco, CA
It s definitely a lovely walk, both for the simple pleasure of walking in nature, and for the many possible stops along the way.
Melissa Karam - San Francisco, CA
I would absolutely do Walk 11 again. It was a fantastic walk. The Stow Lake portion is a whole walk in itself and great for dogs. Loved the waterfall and view from the top of Strawberry Hill and all the historical facts.
Austin Mader-Clark - San Mateo, CA
I learned things about the city I didn t know, and saw parts I ve never been to. I think it d be a fun challenge to try to walk the whole thing.
Ben Keim - Berkeley, CA
Very interesting to walk the route vs. driving. For example, our companion had driven the route several times, but had never gotten out and hiked down to Sutro Baths - he was pleasantly surprised at the ruins. Looking forward to the next walk.
Larry Turner - Oakland, CA
Ocean Beach was an easy walk - the beautiful scenery made it all worthwhile.
Tom Sharp Ellen Miller - San Francisco, CA

FOREWORD
I think San Francisco is the most wonderful city in the world, and I ve been pretty much everywhere. My love affair with the City began through my parents eyes. They met in San Francisco in 1947 on the corner of 9th and Market at the Bank of America. They loved the City.
My dad was from San Jose. Before he was drafted into the military for WWII he was a semi-pro baseball player. After the war, he figured he needed a new career so he moved to San Francisco and became a banker. My mom s family moved here from Wichita, Kansas, after her dad lost his job during the Depression. They owned the Chevron gas station in the Castro. My mom lived all over the City-from State Street in the Castro to Dolores Street in the Mission. She used to tell me stories about how she walked to work every day from Telegraph Hill to 9th and Market-in 4-inch spiked heels!
One day my friend Stephanie Lynne Smith was over. Knowing how much I love walking in the City, she told me about a book her friends were writing called Walking San Francisco s 49 Mile Scenic Drive.
What s the 49 Mile Scenic Drive? I asked. Yes, even though I consider myself to be Mr. San Francisco, I didn t know what it was. I had seen the seagull signs all around town and wondered about them. I was intrigued. I came to find out I live on the 49 Mile Scenic Drive!
Many San Franciscans have had the same experience. Even the authors, Kristine (who grew up in the City) and Carolyn (who has lived here over 20 years), were not familiar with it. They discovered the Drive a few years ago when they were looking for a new exercise goal for the year. They decided to walk the historic 49 mile loop trail over the course of a year, a mile, or two, or three at a time. They had so much fun that they turned their experience into a book.
This is a book for both visitors and long time residents. For example: even though I walk all over Walk 3 (Fisherman s Wharf, the Marina, the Palace of Fine Arts) on a regular basis, Walking San Francisco s 49 Mile Scenic Drive taught me new things about my own neighborhood (people have been asking me about the Fontana Towers for years, and now I know the scoop-see page 50 ). As I read the book, I found myself searching for info about iconic landmarks that I ve always been curious
