ave you ever sat in an audience watching a presenter and thought, “How can H anyone stand up before a group, knowing all eyes are on him or her and give a presentation, yet look so at ease and composed?” After all, it ’s a pretty frightening notion to think that everyone is listening to each word you say and watching every move you make. For most people, giving a presentation ranks right up there with things they fear the most. This fact is especially true for novice presenters or those who only present occasionally. I wrote this book to take the fear out of making a presentation or, at the very least, to make the experience one that will be enjoyable as well as enriching. As a trainer I have made hundreds of presentations to groups large and small, so much of what I write about in this book is based on my experience and observation. I know what it ’s like to hit a home run, and I know what it’s like to fall flat on my face. What I’ve learned throughout the years is thatanyonecan make an effective pre-sentation as long as he or she is prepared, credible, and professional. This book gives you a simple process that you can use to pr epare your presentation and equips you with the skills and techniques to help you look and sound professional. I wrote this book both to coach you as a new presenter and to encourage you to meet the challenge of making presentations head on. You won’t find anything in this book difficult to understand or hard to do. In fact, by the time you finish this book you’ll be able to stand before any group feeling confident and competent, ready to meet your audience’s needs, knowing you’re prepared and set to go. It is with love that I dedicate this book to my wife, Vera Regoli, whose sense of grace and compassion is a source of inspiration to me, and to my son, Aaron, whom I grow more proud of each day. I offer loving thanks to Louise and Al Rosania and

to Gloria Collins for their support and guidance. I also extend my appreciation to Kay Steinkirchner and Maribeth Renne and my colleagues at Manchester for giving me the opportunity to be part of their team. Profound thanks are due Angela McGlynn for teaching me the meaning of true friendship. Finally, I wish to honor Rip Collins, who touched so many and whose memory will remain with me always.
