Andrew G. Marshall marital therapist and author of Wake Up and Change Your Life: How to survive a crisis and be stronger, wiser and happier
‘WealthBeing is an essential guide for anyone who is thinking of creating some wealth but is not sure of the challenges to their well-being that this might entail. Duncan Cheatle, Founder of Prelude Group, home to The Supper Club, Britain’s premier club for fast-growth founders and CEOs and Founder of RiseTo - an online platform that improves employability in young people.
‘A good read that covers what really matters for entrepreneurs. Malcolm has reflected honestly on his own journey and has offered us that same flat mirror with sage learnings, tips, tools and templates. It’s not so much about the money; more about feeling that your success was worthwhile.’
David Glassman, Coach and mentor to successful business leaders
‘I always choose mentors that have been there, done that, got the t-shirt, and in the wealth world Malcolm Durham ticks those boxes and it is an honour to call him a friend. But unlike so many other “Wealth Gurus” out there, Malcolm recognises the full integration of wealth and BEING, wealth on its own is hollow… a must read for anyone serious about wealth and life, I choose BOTH ;-).’
Deri Llewellyn-Davies AKA ‘The Strategy Man’

WealthBeing and me
Thank you for taking the time to read this guide to creating wealth and enjoying a sense of wellbeing.
I believe we have moved beyond the old focus on work–life balance. These days many people want two things in their lives:
1. A reasonable amount of wealth, and the freedom that it brings.
2. A feeling of wellbeing, with the knowledge that they have fulfilled their emotional needs, and can continue to do so.
The problem is that it always looks like a trade-off. The usual ways of achieving one always seem to involve giving up on the other.
On the WEALTH side
On the WELLBEING side
If you’re aiming for the top of the corporate tree as a route to financial independence, the perceived wisdom is that this will mean working long hours over many years and sacrificing the joys of family life. Virtue is not always rewarded, success is not guaranteed and the commitment required may take a physical toll.
If you create your own business, the rewards can be greater and you probably won’t get fired. But you may need to give up a career and risk savings built up over years in a venture that could fail in weeks, destroying your finances and your self-esteem.
The quest for emotional fulfilment may demand even more than the ambition for wealth. I’ve seen advice that says you should spend six hours a day communicating with others. Nice work, if you can get it. The pundits offer nothing about how to hold down a job at the same time.
People who make a real commitment to fulfilling their emotional needs often become disillusioned with the world we live in. They may be left stuck in the middle – unhappy with society’s insistent materialism, but feeling empty when they reject it.
So what can we do? The answer – or, at least, one answer – is WealthBeing.
WealthBeing is a way of creating wealth and nurturing your wellbeing, without having to choose one at the expense of the other. It’s a way of having the pounds without the pain. It’s a way of combining the two in a uniquely satisfying state of balanced contentment. It’s a way of achieving, if not nirvana, at least what one of my friends (a big fan of Winnie the Pooh) insists on calling ‘plentifitudleness’.
This isn’t the right path for everyone. But I believe it is a path many people would love to follow, if only they could see where it is. There have been plenty of books on wealth creation and lots more on wellbeing. But up till now there’s been nothing, as far as I can see, that brings them both together. After all, how are you supposed to follow a wealth creation guide that asks you to commit to keeping your customers happy 24/7, if you’re also being told you must spend six hours a day socialising and communicating with those around you to nourish your wellbeing?
WealthBeing is a way of creating wealth and nurturing your wellbeing, without having to choose one at the expense of the other
This book is aimed at solving this conundrum. Its goal is to draw together the essential elements of business and wellbeing in a practical guide based on my own experience and on what I have learned from hard knocks and wise heads along the way.
WealthBeing is a combination of financial freedom, which allows me to do what I choose to do, and the satisfying feeling that my emotional needs have been met. I’m not famous and I don’t own a football club, a Ferrari or any of the other trappings that bolster the egos of wealthy men. What I do have – most of the time – is a sense of deep contentment, of having a life that has value, both financially and emotionally, to me and to others. I am in a position where I am able to do the things I enjoy, either for myself or because they benefit others (while always being small, in the general scheme of things). Like all states of life, it’s not permanent. But if you know what to do, you can create and maintain it.
One way I can help others is by passing on what I have learnt, to help them create WealthBeing too. The road that’s brought me here has included its fair share of trials and tri
