Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. MY object in translating the Civil Code of France into English is to place at the disposal of the members of the Legal Profession in English-speak ing countries, a work enabling them to find out and establish what the French law is. For that purpose I have compared my translation with the original records, and have sworn to its correctness. Supplements will hereafter appear, containing the new amendments to the Code. Foreign Courts when called upon to decide questions of French law have sometimes rendered decisions not in accordance with the laws of that country. This book, it is to be hoped, may be found useful in preventing the recurrence of such cases. In remembering the achievements of France's great Conqueror, the Code is not among the works which have contributed the least to his fame, and its effects will be more lasting than those of his great battles. When presiding over the meetings at which the Articles of the Code were discussed, Napoleon, although not a jurist, displayed such quickness of perception and soundness of views as to astonish those present.
