Description

At the age of fifty, when most people start planning for retirement, Dr Prathap Chandra Reddy decided that he was going to revolutionize healthcare in India. In 1983, the renowned cardiologist launched the country s first professionally run private sector hospital system. Thirty years later, Apollo Hospitals has become one of the world s largest providers of high-technology healthcare. In the areas of heart, liver and bone marrow transplants, as also in knee and hip replacement surgery and robotic surgery, Apollo is an industry pioneer and a world leader. More than 32 million men and women have been treated at Apollo s fifty hospitals, which are staffed by over 70,000 professionals. How did Prathap Chandra Reddy, who grew up in the small village of Aragonda in Andhra Pradesh, actualize his dream? How did he overcome the seemingly insurmountable odds and transform the sustainable development space? How did he become one of India s enduring icons? Full of delightful anecdotes and dramatic twists and turns, The Healer tells Dr Reddy s inspirational story like it has never been told before.

I admire Dr Prathap Chandra Reddy greatly, because he returned to India despite the enormous opportunities and prospects that he had in the United States. The contribution he has made in emphasizing preventive care and ensuring a parallel stream of high-class research in all the hospitals that he has established sets a benchmark which I hope others will be inspired to emulate. I believe this book, authored by Pranay Gupte, a distinguished journalist-intellectual, is a justifiable contribution to this entrepreneur who has excelled in whatever he has undertaken, most notably by bringing up institutions of high excellence and world-class professional standards in the field of medical science in India.
Dr Rajendra K. Pachauri, Chairman, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize)
Dr Reddy built Apollo Hospitals from the ground up to provide state-of-the-art, high-grade medical diagnosis and treatment in India. He has grown his business model effectively and professionally over time. His model has been noticed and emulated in other countries in the developing and developed world. In the years I have interacted with Dr Reddy, he has always remained humble, affable and extremely down to earth, ready to help and assist and worry about the details later. Dr Reddy is a role model for many in terms of serving the nation in a sustainable, effective manner. He has been respected for imparting professional medical care to many, many Indians and his contribution deserves to be recognized. I m pleased that Pranay Gupte has written this major biography of an icon.
Ratan N. Tata, Chairman, Tata Trusts
I heartily commend Dr Reddy for two achievements. Since good health is a pre-requisite for human development, I have always believed that apart from education, health care is the biggest driver of India s journey towards becoming a developed nation. Given the diversities in our society, India needs to pursue multiple models of health care. However, the common denominator in all these multiple paradigms has to be the commitment to both quality and compassion in the service of patients. In its own category of health care business, the Apollo chain of hospitals has earned its reputation by showing this commitment in abundant measure. Dr Reddy s other exemplary achievement is women s empowerment in Indian business. His four daughters Preetha, Suneeta, Shobana and Sangita who have helped him so ably in building and running his enterprise have shown that professionally well-qualified and capable women can be equal to their male counterparts in any enterprise, especially in the enterprise of health care.
Mukesh D. Ambani, Chairman and CEO, Reliance Industries Limited
I have always looked to Dr Reddy for advice on health-related matters for my family and friends. He has the rare ability to provide comfort and the reassurance of a personal overview despite the myriad pressures that weigh on him while leading such a large enterprise. He has indeed endeared himself to many with his characteristic humility and compassionate demeanour. Not many have the ability to pursue their dreams and create a legacy that enriches the lives of millions. Dr Reddy is doubly blessed - to be able to create this inspiring legacy and also to receive the gratitude of the millions he and his institutions have served.
Y.C. Deveshwar, Chairman, ITC Limited
Dr Reddy is one of the giant figures of post-Independence India whose contributions to improving health care have been invaluable. At a personal level, I am always touched by his warmth and affection, and also by his continuing goodwill towards everyone who comes in contact with him.
Kamal Nath, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development
The Greek God Apollo was the God of heavenly light, illuminating the soul of man. Apollo Hospitals have provided a similar yeoman service for health care, touching the poorest of the poor and providing quality service to all patients. The spirit behind this is a man, a visionary ahead of his times. Dr Prathap Chandra Reddy is innovative, seeking to provide solutions for health care which will endure. He believes that health care must provide accessible and affordable solutions for ordinary people. He has in the past and will in the future lead from the front. Apollo Hospitals and Dr Reddy are synonymous - they both represent excellence and passion for service.
Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Law and Justice, Communications and Information Technology
Dr Reddy is a visionary who has transformed the medical landscape in India and made it more accessible and affordable to common people of the country. He founded Apollo Hospitals, the success of which is a topic of a Harvard Business School case study. Today, the Apollo Group is the reference point for peers in the industry. At this age also, he is continuously working towards his vision of making India a health care destination of the world. A great social change agent and a great human being, he is a true asset for this country. I am confident that his legacy will be there forever.
G.M. Rao, Chairman, GMR Group
Dr Reddy is a trendsetter in setting up private health care institutions in India and has paved the path for others to follow. His hospitals attracted the best non-resident Indian doctors; thus, he reversed the brain drain and brought talent back to India. I think that the private sector s involvement is majorly responsible for creating a paradigm shift in the Indian health care scenario. India has over 750 corporate hospitals. Apollo Group hospitals perform more major surgeries than any other facility in the world. This is the true testimony to the quality and consistency of health care that private sector involvement can bring to India.
G.V.K. Reddy, Founder and Chairman, GVK Group
Dr Prathap C. Reddy s story is that of a unique, extraordinary leader who combines in himself the ingredients of a pioneer and a pathfinder, commanding enormous respect, affection and admiration. He is a thought leader and nation-builder in the critical health care sector, and this book is a must-read.
Tarun Das, Senior Mentor, Confederation of Indian Industries
Apollo Telemedicine Services is a very wonderful contribution to the health care of the people who live in rural villages, and I hope that people all over the world will follow Dr Reddy s lead, because if they do, the benefits of hi-tech medicine can go to everyone and not just to people who live in big cities.
William Jefferson Clinton, forty-second President of the United States
The most striking thing about Dr Prathap Reddy is the sheer breadth of his vision for Apollo and for his country and the values on which it is based. Over the last thirty years he has not only enhanced the lives of millions by providing them with health care but enriched India and the world with research, education and innovation. Apollo is now one of the great health care companies of the world and he one of its great health leaders.
Lord Nigel Crisp, House of Lords, British Parliament, and former CEO of the National Health Service
As diagnostic imaging continues to improve, as surgical tools become increasingly refined, and as the techniques are improved through experience, the effect on patient care and recovery stands to improve. The adoption of minimally invasive surgery will surely spread into fields where they have not yet even been attempted.
