On October 5, 2016, a flight attendant on a South Korean airline evacuated all the passengers and crew members after a man’s new Galaxy Note 7 smartphone began smoking. The device had been exchanged two weeks before the flight.

#2

The most disturbing part of this is that Klering’s phone caught fire on Tuesday, one day before the Southwest flight, and Samsung knew about it and didn’t say anything.

The crisis grew as customers continued to send in their faulty Galaxy Note 7s, and Samsung had no clear plan of action. Their reputation was falling apart, and they were completely oblivious to it.

#4

I first settled in South Korea in September 2009. I lived there until the fall of 2016, between reporting stints in Vietnam and Cambodia. I was immediately fascinated by my new home.

#5

I had spent the past six years reporting on Samsung, and I knew that the company was a maze of different cultures. Samsung wanted people to believe the exploding Galaxy Note 7 was the result of a problem with the batteries, but I knew that the problem began with the company’s culture.

#6

I became persona non grata over the Note 7 fiasco. It’s a risk confronted by any journalist who goes against the official line of the company they cover. But I knew this was the only way to write honestly about Samsung.

#7

Around the corner from the ad agency headquarters was Samsung’s Leeum Museum of Art, founded by the wife of Samsung’s chairman, Lee Kun-hee. A prestigious landmark, the museum was home to paintings by Rothko and art pieces by Damien Hirst and medieval Korean pottery.

#8

The back story of the Galaxy Note 7 failure began in July 2011, when I was on a morning coffee break in Gwanghwamun Square. I opened my phone to an email from Samsung’s public relations team. It was a response to a request that would define my work for the next decade.

#9

Samsung’s market researchers in the United States thought Apple’s Think Different motto was pompous and presumptuous. Their research suggested that Android users considered themselves smart and independent in their choices, while Apple fans considered themselves creative but were, in reality, sheep followers.

#10

The legal battle between Samsung and Apple was just the subplot of a bigger story, which was how Samsung tried to compete with Apple and become the world’s most famous and successful electronic devices company.

#11

In 2016, Samsung released the Galaxy Note 7, a phone with a larger screen and stronger hardware than Apple’s iPhone. It was encased in an eye-catching glass and metal casing, giving it a luxurious rather than cheap plastic feel.

#12

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was released on August 3, 2016, ten days earlier than the previous year’s Galaxy phone release date. It was met with wide acclaim from Samsung’s suppliers and consumers.

#13

The Galaxy Note 7 was released on August 19, 2016, to rave reviews. But within days, YouTube videos and social media posts began circulating about the phone's flaws. Within months, the company had to recall the product.

#14

The Galaxy Note 7 was the shining star for Samsung. But it was also their biggest disaster. The company had to recall an estimated 1 million phones that used the Samsung SDI battery.
