INTRODUCTION TO SECOND EDITION
S ince the first edition of this book was published, time management and productivity challenges in the workplace and in business have intensified, largely because of two widespread trends- the increased use of the Internet and smart phones (to the point of an addiction for many), and, in many instances, the pruning of company staffs to save money, leaving fewer people to perform more roles and often with shorter and sometimes dramatically unrealistic deadlines.
As the world spins at an even faster pace and the demands on us accelerate, it is clear this second edition of Work Less, Do More is needed more than ever.
Technological advances make it easier to work from anywhere, anytime, 24/7. But who wants to work every hour of every day? There are times when it feels that way, especially if you’re a working parent with school age children and you are scrambling to fulfill your work and family obligations while juggling a full-time or even a part-time job with projects and deadlines to be met.
If you find yourself working more and enjoying it less, or even getting less done, despite the longer hours, this book is designed for you. Not only will it help you get more done in fewer hours, but the periods you spend working will be more satisfying and rewarding because there will be more time left for you, and for the activities and people you care about outside of work, making you feel less resentful, since your life and work will no longer be so out of balance.
Working too much without taking the proper breaks, or failing to self-pace in a realistic and healthy way, is unproductive. That kind of endless work schedule can lead to burning out, stressing out, and living a life totally controlled by others.
The "backlash" to the 24/7 workday that includes evenings and weekends may have already begun. Volkswagen, the German car manufacturer, banned after-hours receipt of business e-mails via a smart phone. According to the article, "Volkswagen Agrees to Curb Company E-Mail in Off Hours" published in The New York Times, the ban came after it was determined that burnout accounted in Germany for approximately 10 million sick days annually. 1
Unfortunately, not every company is that aware of the consequences of its employees working around the clock even if it is by their own choice. That’s why it’s important for you to find a way to make things better for yourself so you improve your own productivity and your work-life balance. That way, we all contribute to the economic growth of ourselves, our company, and even our country. With better productivity usually comes more income and, after taking care of any debts or savings needs, more spending. But increased productivity means doing what we have to do mor
