PREFACE
We are thrilled to bring you this handbook on talent development and training for healthcare provider spaces. Our goal was to create an evergreen resource for healthcare trainers and practitioners that shared best practices from seasoned professionals. The Association for Talent Development (ATD) has been creating training resources since 1943, and in early 2020, released a new content model to effectively cater material to healthcare audiences. Aligning with TRIAGE (training resources, ideas, and analysis guided by experts), this handbook encompasses key topics in learning and development and homes in on crucial areas specific to the industry. We envision it as a guide that every practitioner can have at their desk or working space to turn to whenever they need tried-and-true advice from subject matter experts (SMEs) and peers in the field.
The demands for talent development in healthcare are ever-increasing, and more healthcare organizations are realizing that their success as a business depends on the success of their talent development professionals, regardless of where they reside within the organizational chart or what their scope of responsibilities encompasses. As the function grows in importance, and continues to touch every nook and cranny of the healthcare organization, it will be asked to do more with the (sometimes limited) resources and support available. Fortunately, there’s a burgeoning community of skilled and knowledgeable talent development practitioners who are willing and ready to impart their expertise.
Thus, it was important for us to make this a collective effort—to consult SMEs from key areas to discuss their findings, experiences, observations, and recommendations. We each brought our strengths and backgrounds from the field to bring an idea to life. Jacqueline Burandt, having served as the former executive director of the Center for Learning Excellence at University Health, brought decades’ worth of TD experience and leadership. Gregory Rider, currently the director of corporate compliance at EmblemHealth, brought expertise from the various TD roles he’s held in the past 20+ years across several segments of the healthcare industry. Niranjani Chidamber Papavaritis, having engaged with healthcare executives through a former role at UnitedHealth Group/Optum and serving as the content manager for healthcare training content at ATD, brought experience creating solutions for improved leadership development and training practices at health systems. Together, we had the perfect blend of past experiences, ongoing advancements, and the bond of a shared passion to contribute to the growth of the field.
We wanted to include a diverse group of contributors from within the industry to bring together the best stakeholders and provide perspective from different angles. We reached out to 25 healthcare professionals—including trainers, clinicians, executives, and consultants—with the goal of creating a book written “by the people, for the people.” And we are honored to highlight each SME’s wisdom and voice through their respective chapters.
While working with each contributor, we had many exchanges to refine their ideas—from the formation of scope to reviewing drafts and offering feedback and insight—striving to bring out the best of each content area. As worlds came together and collided, our contributors began to bond with one another as well, a harmony of talent development and healthcare, mirroring themes and topics within the book. The incidental overlap with the COVID-19 pandemic allowed for serendipitous closeness, as we shared our ups and downs, changing routines, and the direct impact we felt from the virus. We conversed about the way COVID-19 was shifting trends before our eyes and significantly affecting how we were designing, delivering, and evaluating training. And we exchanged thoughts on how our priorities were changing not just daily, but minute by minute.
We want to give a special note of appreciation to the mastermind behind this entire project—Ryan Changcoco. Serving as senior content manager for industry verticals, including healthcare, Ryan had envisioned this handbook years before its creation. He brought the three of us together on a shared mission, and provided endless support throughout the process as an advisor, colleague, and dear friend. We are extremely grateful to have been given the chance to work on this unique project and to have had Ryan’s enthusiasm bring this book to life.
To quote Jane Goodall: “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” We have cherished this experience and hope that we can make a smidge of a difference to the growth of learning and development for healthcare providers. We are grateful
