Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The world is a lot bigger than what you see around you. The majority of people don’t understand the reality of what's happening in the world because their communities are so insular.
#2
As your life expectancy increases, so should your timelines for goals. If you’re twenty-seven and hate your job after working your way up for five years, it’s fine to take a step backward and find another job.
#3
Gratitude is a light ingredient that provides more sustainable fuel than negative ones. If you draw energy from gratitude, it will last much longer than energy drawn from insecurity, anger, or disappointment.
#4
Self-awareness has a close relationship with self-love and self-acceptance. When you accept yourself, you no longer feel the need to use your ambition as a crutch to get acceptance from others.
#5
Self-awareness is the ability to recognize and acknowledge your weaknesses. It helps you navigate around them by focusing on your strengths. You should never overstress the importance of improving your weaknesses, because that will only make you feel worse about yourself.
#6
Accountability is the most challenging ingredient for most people, because their self-esteem is based on the outcomes of their actions. It’s difficult to take blame when you’re not kind to yourself or optimistic about the future, but taking it leaves you vulnerable to other people’s judgment.
#7
As you work on developing this ingredient, ask yourself whether you can quit your job tomorrow. If you can’t, you’ll be trapped in your job, and unable to take accountability.
#8
Optimism is not the same as delusion. Optimism is the belief that you can navigate any challenge, while pessimism is the belief that the worst will happen. It takes time to rewire your emotions, but start by surrounding yourself with optimistic people and limiting your interactions with people who drag you down mentally.
#9
Optimism is a map that helps you see your destination. It makes the journey more enjoyable than the outcome. It is exciting to wake up in the morning and play your game when you have hope and confidence in achieving your goals.
