Sample Book Insights:
#1 The question What would you attempt to do if you knew you wouldn’t fail. is a great one. It inspires people to reach for their goals and to risk more. The question What do you learn when you fail. is not as common, and people are not well prepared to answer it.
#2 I made the mother of all stupid mistakes on March 12, 2009, when I tried to go through security at a major airport with a forgotten handgun in my briefcase. It was by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever done.
#3 I was stopped at the airport security checkpoint, and the man who operated the screening device knew me. He said he would have to report the incident, and I was taken away. The head of the sheriff’s division who filled out the police report knew me too.
#4 I have made many mistakes in my life, and I know that if I can be careful enough, I won’t fall from heaven. But a mistake is a declaration of the way I am, a jolt to the way I intend, and a reminder that I am not dealing with facts.

#1

The question What would you attempt to do if you knew you wouldn’t fail. is a great one. It inspires people to reach for their goals and to risk more. The question What do you learn when you fail. is not as common, and people are not well prepared to answer it.

#2

I made the mother of all stupid mistakes on March 12, 2009, when I tried to go through security at a major airport with a forgotten handgun in my briefcase. It was by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever done.

#3

I was stopped at the airport security checkpoint, and the man who operated the screening device knew me. He said he would have to report the incident, and I was taken away. The head of the sheriff’s division who filled out the police report knew me too.

#4

I have made many mistakes in my life, and I know that if I can be careful enough, I won’t fall from heaven. But a mistake is a declaration of the way I am, a jolt to the way I intend, and a reminder that I am not dealing with facts.

#5

The words be careful have been my takeaway from this experience. Mistakes are acceptable as long as the damage isn’t too great. In life, sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn.

#6

When we lose, we feel pain, and the only way we can describe that pain is with the phrase It’s only a game. But when we win, nothing hurts, and that doesn’t take into account the other difficulties our wins cause us.

#7

I experienced being emotionally stuck after I made a foolish mistake. I had forgotten my passport, which was in Florida, more than 2,000 miles away. I was not allowed to board a plane to Canada without it. We found a solution that cost $20,000.

#8

The quality that distinguishes a successful person from an unsuccessful one is the ability to manage disappointment and loss. This is a challenge because losses can often defeat us mentally.

#9

We must expect mistakes, failures, and losses in life, since each of us will face them. But we must take them as they come, not allow them to build up.

#10

There are many traps that can befall us when we are losing, and they all stem from the gap between knowing and doing. To be successful, we must bridge that gap.

#11

When we experience a loss, we have a choice. If we respond to it the right way, the loss becomes smaller to us. However, if we respond the wrong way, or if we fail to respond at all, that loss becomes greater.

#12

We need to learn how to overcome an early loss and not let it become magnified. If we can do that, we can move forward. It isn’t always easy to do, but even someone who has faced a very great loss can learn to do it.

#13

All losses affect us, but we must not allow them to control us. We must not let the fear of negative consequences keep us from taking risks. We must let go emotionally of our losses.

#14

A loss is not completely a loss if you can learn from it. If you stay where a loss leaves you, you can become stuck there. But you can choose to change, grow, and learn from your losses.

#15

Learning from losses is not easy, but it is worth it. It requires us to do things that are not natural, and it takes discipline to do the right thing when everything is wrong.

#16

Some people bounce back from losses, while others fail and never get back up again. It isn't due to timing, social status, the degree of adversity, or anything else outside of their control. The difference is on the inside.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

Everyone experiences adversity. Some people are made humble by it, while others are made hard. And they carry that spirit with them everywhere they go.
