#1

Dark horses are people who have excelled despite not being the typical example of a person who excels. They may have dropped out of college, been fired, or struggled to find a career they love. But they always worked hard, and eventually found their place in the world.

#2

The journey of a dark horse is not always easy. They may feel like a round peg in a square hole, and they may be stuck in a tedious job that doesn’t fulfill them. But eventually, they will realize that they are not living a fulfilling life.

#3

Dark horses are people who have decided to turn their lives around. They have forsaken the straight path for a winding path, but that doesn’t mean they’re not following a path at all. They are simply choosing opportunities that fit their truest self.

#4

The Law of Jante is a set of deeply rooted cultural beliefs concerning the relationship between individuality and success in Scandinavia. It states that everybody is supposed to be treated the same, and you are not supposed to think that you’re special in any way.

#5

The goal of standardization is to maximize the efficiency of a system of production. The primary mechanism by which standardization accomplishes this is through the elimination of individual variation.

#6

The first people to be standardized were the workers in the factories, who were converted into cogs in the great supermachine of industrial efficiency.

#7

Standardization began in the workplace, and was then applied to our children’s education. We standardized our work, learning, and careers, and eventually our entire lives.

#8

The path to success in the Age of Standardization is defined by the standardized tracks of lawyers, doctors, and engineers. society made an implicit promise to its citizens in the Age of Standardization: if you can follow the straight path to its destination, you will be granted employment, social status, and financial security.

#9

The Standardization Covenant seemed to be fair and egalitarian, compared to what came before, but in reality, it was just a front. It allowed anyone to claim any success, as long as they could prove they were more meritorious than others.

#10

The Law of Jante, as well as the Standardization Covenant, is a judgment almost universally embraced throughout the Age of Standardization. It demands that we suppress our yearnings and delay our happiness in the name of a long, dutiful march toward professional proficiency.

#11

The unquestioning obedience to a system of talent development that ignores personal fulfillment has profound consequences for all of us. It forces us to experience a crisis of soul-searching doubt when we realize we are not living a life of authenticity.

#12

The Standardization Covenant does not prioritize personal fulfillment, and thus does not value the feelings of disaffection, restlessness, and uncertainty experienced by dark horses.

#13

The Law of Jante, which is the Standardization Covenant in reverse, tells us that to be a good citizen, we must follow the Standard Formula to attain excellence. But to be a dark horse, we must harness our individuality in the pursuit of fulfillment, which creates the optimal conditions for attaining excellence.

#14

Ingrid, the flower designer, was able to find a career that she was truly passionate about. She enjoyed making people happy by creating beautiful things that enhanced someone’s little moment. She had no savings, but she was able to start her own floral design company.

#15

Ingrid’s decision to stop working as a public relations consultant and focus on her new business was not an act of defiance against the system. She had never considered a career in floristry before. Instead, she began to take her individuality seriously.

#16

Every success story has a common pattern. People with dark horses personalities find success by harnessing their individuality, and thereby achieve professional excellence.

#17

When dark horses make the choice to prioritize fulfillment, they do not focus on the potential wealth to be had or how masterful they might one day become.
