Comments from students who have taken Gene Perret’s course on “Starting and Completing That Book You’ve Always Wanted to Write,” upon which Write Your Book Now! is based.
I took Gene’s class on “Completing That Book.” It was just what I needed. How does an engineer, steeped in mathematics and science, convert a vivid dream into a novel? Gene has the answer. His focus on planning and structure appealed to my background and the way I like to work, but still left lots of room to explore my creative side—and my story. Gene provided a step-by-step method that develops my ideas and keeps me motivated. His approach can be applied to both nonfiction and fiction. With his help, I am well on my way.
—Jonathan Hops
Gene Perret makes something difficult, like getting published, seem easy and possible. His course titled, “Finishing that Book You’ve Always Wanted to Write” will make my name a household word. Thanks to Gene, I can finally become famous. Now I can paper my bathroom in the large house I will buy with my earnings with the rejections letters from the past. Thanks Gene, you are my inspiration and the best teacher ever!!!
—Marcia Hinds
For the past decade, I have been planning to write my book. Gene’s class gave me the framework to get it started and organized. His encouragement and experience in the “business” has been invaluable.
—Jeanne Howard
I enjoyed Gene’s style of teaching; his humorous approach to writing made going to class quite entertaining. And the organizational tips helped me get on the right track for starting my book. Having the steps outlined one by one made the daunting task of writing a nonfiction book a little less intimidating.
—Jodai Saremi
I found Gene Perret’s class to be inspiring and captivating with real life stories of his work in show business with Carol Burnett, Jim Nabors, and especially my favorite, Bob Hope. Using real life stories, along with supplying the various techniques to follow while planning/writing will certainly help me as I move forward with my latest book. Thank you VERY much.
—Linda Scott
Prior to the class, I had a book in progress but after completing the outline and writing a draft of two of the chapters, I was “stuck” … and I remained so for the next 12 plus months! That is until I took your writing class about how to finish and market my book.
The result of finishing your class is that now I have a proven “pathway“ to follow, prepared by an accomplished author of over 40 books and taught by a very interesting teacher.
With this new “pathway” to follow, I now know what I need to do to finish my book, how to do it, how to use a proven organizational method, how to schedule my writing and tailor it to my lifestyle, how to find and meet publishers, and much more.
—Nancy S. Altman
I attended Gene’s writing class and found that his years of successful experience writing about and for the entertainment industry brought a unique and insightful view of not only the art of writing a book, but about a man who loves his craft!
—Linda Hertz
I love having a road map when venturing into unknown territory, and Gene Perret’s class provided a terrific step-by-step approach that anyone who needs help organizing and completing their book can follow. I highly recommend it!
—Patricia Jones, MBA
Gene Perret is not only a gifted writer, but a natural teacher. His gift of gab, along with his wit and humor while he imparts well thought out information in a patient, unpretentious manner, make his classes a delight.
—Diane du Bois
For anyone who has ever considered or tried writing a book, Gene provides the practical tools and expert guidance necessary to not only complete your book but to complete a good book. The sooner you read Gene’s book, the sooner you will be on the bookshelf.
—Sophia Fischer

CONTENTS
Introduction: What This Book Is and Is Not
This book was written to help you get your book written…it contains a system for planning, starting, and finishing a book…it doesn’t concern itself with writing style…it simply advocates writing and completing your book.
1 So What’s Keeping You from Writing Your Book?
A list of possible reasons why books never get written…with a cure for each one…often just knowing and recognizing the problem can be the solution.
2 No One Can Write a Book
You write a book one part at a time…divide the task into “bite-sized” chunks…this system advocates focus, organization, momentum, and discipline…writing a book may not be easy, but it is do-able.
3 Three Important Attitudes
Get your thoughts written…resist being too critical too early…the fine tuning can come later.
4 Define Your Book
Tell yourself what your book is about…why it should be written…why you’re the person to write this book…remind yourself who you are writing this book for.
5 Start Chipping Away
Begin your book with just one idea…then add another, and another…eventually note all the ideas you have for this book…these ideas will become chapters in your book…build the structure of your book one idea at a time.
6 Refine and Organize Your List of Chapters
Arrange your ideas into a logical sequence…divide your book into categories…combine or delete chapters…eliminate duplications…add new chapters where needed…this will result in the table of contents for your book.
7 Describe Each of Your Chapters
Expand your notes…tell yourself what each chapter in your book should accomplish…list anecdotes, quotes, examples that you might use…a list of benefits of describing each of your chapters.
8 Write a Chapter
This is a test run before you begin to write the complete text…take time to make your points…converse with your readers through your manuscript…get a feel for how long your chapters will be…get an idea of how long it will take you to plan and write the individual chapters.
9 How Big a Book Do You Plan to Write?
How many chapters will be in your book?…what’s the average word count for each chapter?…calculate to see how big a book you’re planning to write.
10 Plan Your Writing Schedule
A well planned writing schedule is the heart of this system for finishing your book…it should have definite dates for completing segments of your project…it should allow for unforeseen circumstances that can intrude on your writing time…it should be a challenging plan, but not too imposing…it should allow time for relaxation, rewards, and a generous grace period for you to meet your deadlines…it should consider pre-planning and review and rewrite time…it should be “results oriented.”
11 Get Your Book to the Market Place
Much of your preparatory work can also be used to market your book before you complete it…is that wise?…it’s an individual choice…what are the benefits of marketing your book now?…what are the drawbacks?…a realistic look at rejection, which is a part of the writer’s life.
12 Writing Your Book Chapter by Chapter
Advice for writing the manuscript…let each chapter “marinate”…maintain momentum by keeping a steady writing pace…discover your most productive writing time…there’s a time to let ideas flow and a time to be judgmental…allow some time to pass before rewriting…with a well-conceived plan, you may write your chapters in any sequence…some benefits of writing out of sequence.
13 Stick to Your Schedule
A schedule is only effective if your stick to it…it’s a way of measuring your progress…it shows whether you’re meeting your goals or not…the steady progress of meeting your goals can be an incentive to continue on until you complete your book.
14 Rewriting Your Manuscript
You’ve completed a first draft…check for typos and mechanical flaws…check for logic flaws…have you said what you set out to say with this book?…several steps to take in reviewing and rewriting the manuscript.
15 Preparing Your Manuscript for Publication
Adding non-text material to your completed manuscript…acknowledgements, dedication page, preface, introduction, prologue, endorsements…you may want to write the author’s biography…the front and back flaps…the back cover material…if you want it in the book, you should send it with your manuscript.
