#5

The five-hour drive from Mar del Plata to Buenos Aires was spent discussing the recent cruise ship outbreaks around the world, and how safe they felt going on the Zaandam. As it turned out, almost none of the passengers were from Argentina or South America.

#6

The couple had worried about COVID-19, and even considered canceling the trip. But they were reassured by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who said international travel was safe.

#7

The crew hallway on B Deck buzzed with activity. Wiwit Widarto was at his post in the laundry operations center, overseeing it all. He had everyone coming at him, typical for the beginning of a cruise.

#8

Erin Montgomery was the sanitation officer on the Zaandam. She had worked cruise ships for three years, and was in charge of making sure the ship was clean and safe.

#9

In 2020, the Zaandam was sent to court-ordered monitoring to clean up its act after years of dumping oily wastewater into U. S. waters and the pristine seas around the Bahamas. The ship’s captain, Micky Arison, was repeatedly brought before federal judge Patricia Seitz, who after multiple probation violations vented her frustration in open court.

#10

The Zaandam was one of the most protected ships out there, and yet Erin was still nervous. She knew a disease outbreak when she saw one, and she was sure that the passengers on board were safe.

#11

As the Zaandam prepared to leave Buenos Aires, the virus was still seen as a problem for the Chinese, the Italians, and the Spaniards. Global hot spots were half a world away from the Zaandam, or at least that was the opinion of president of the Holland America Line, Orlando Ashford.

#12

In the White House, Olivia Troye worked as a homeland security and counterterrorism adviser to Vice President Mike Pence. She was tasked with briefing him about cruise ship outbreaks, and since early February, when President Trump placed Pence in charge of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, cruise ship outbreaks have been a part of her daily routine.

#13

On March 8, the Zaandam sailed past Buenos Aires, with Claudia Osiani strolling the ship’s high-tech bridge. Captain Ane Smit went over his final preparations for a challenging route through some of the world’s roughest waters. The ship carried a meager health detachment, one doctor for every three hundred people on board.

#14

The Zaandam was ready to set sail from Buenos Aires. The crew was unaware of its presence, a stowaway that was microscopic in size yet capable of overwhelming this huge ship.
Insights from Chapter 2
