#1

The idea that we should be able to find a job that we love is not only normal, but also easy to fulfill. But the reality is that we cannot find work that we both love and tolerate for the money.

#2

The modern world is built around the hope of how things that had previously seemed separate, such as money and creative fulfillment, can be united. However, this has been a catastrophe in practice, as we constantly fall short of our expectations.

#3

We tend to believe that instinct and luck can’t lead to good results in matters of relationships or careers, yet we take it for granted that children will need many hundreds of hours of instruction to become competent in math or foreign languages.

#4

The obstacles created by professional ignorance can be addressed by schools, universities, and technical colleges. We have become adept at addressing the problems created by a lack of skills.

#5

The modern world has made it easy to know where the good jobs are. We’ve created a multitude of employment and recruitment agencies, headhunting firms, and networking sites, so we can be sure to have sound insights into where the demand for different types of labor might lie.

#6

The most important obstacle to finding a suitable job is figuring out what kind of job you would love to do. This is a problem that has received little attention. The current style of exercise, which is to ask people to rate occupations such as working outdoors or helping others in a retail environment, is ineffective and detached from reality.

#7

The problem with today's career tests is that they stick to types of work that already exist. It is possible that the kind of work someone is best suited to doesn't exist yet.

#8

The purpose of this book is to help you correct an epochal problem that quietly gnaws at our lives and tramples upon our legitimate hopes. We are promised that fulfilling jobs exist, but we are not prepared for how to discover our aptitudes and appetites.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The vocation myth is the belief that we have a specific career path that we’re called to follow. However, this belief is based on religious experiences that are rare, and we often don’t realize that it’s secularized. We still believe that something within us is pulling us towards our career.
