Preamble

I believe in public speaking as a natural right, and I believe anyone can be a good public speaker. (That includes you.) Maybe even a great public speaker. I am writing this book to help people become stronger speakers through good speech writing and good delivery. Working through this book will help you learn about some tools and techniques that can add power to your speeches. Because speaking without power is not speaking, it is only talking.
The ideas for book developed from several years as a public speaking teacher and as a veteran Toastmaster (Districts 58 and 31!). You do not know about Toastmasters International? You should find out. Toastmasters International is dedicated to improving your public speaking and leadership skills through peer support. I highly recommend the organization. It can only help you advance your speaking skills.
This book is not the usual “how-to” book on public speaking. It is a supplement to those who are looking for methods to improve their speeches. The ideas in this book come from my work trying to understand public speaking in more detail - to go a bit beyond the methods presented in other publications, courses of study, and speaking clubs. My intent is to help you add power to your speeches. Hopefully, it may help untap your own set of tools to get to your “next level.”
We will touch on some basics and then move to tools and techniques that add power to your speeches because I want you to speak confidently and with power. Because speaking without power is not speaking, it is only talking.
My Path to Pubic Speaking

I am not a gifted or a natural speaker. I spoke poorly for at least the first 30 years of my life. I mumbled. I spoke very softly. My voice meandered like a flat old river. But that needed to change when I started my first career job.
Commission selling, my first “real job,” required skilled communications with customers and senior managers of large and small companies. Failure to communicate would mean no commissions. No commissions meant missing the rent.
The ultimate idea of sales is to persuade the right people to buy the right things. That is a terrific skill. How did I know that I communicated badly? One customer refused to talk to me on the phone because he could not understand me. Another customer threw me out of his office because I was wasting his time speaking gibberish. So, I practiced “speaking” every day as a survival technique. Little by little, I improved. I tested. I listened. I tried and failed, tried and succeeded. The outcome? I made a living. But I paid a physical price caused by stress, and an emotional price caused by low self-esteem. Although I was successful at sales, I suffered for years because I did not address the root cause of my poor communication skills.
My stressed voice led to a stay at Lennox Hill Hospital in New York City where they found polyps on my vocal cords. Speaking improperly had warped them. That is, anxiety stressed my vocal cords. My nervousness, low self-esteem, and insecurity choked my voice. I chose to power through it – to my peril - because it did not always work. I would lose my voice in the middle of negotiating a contract, or even just lunch. Laryngitis crept in at the worst moments. I was always hoarse and raspy. That raspiness came from the polyps that grew on my vocal cords because I spoke improperly. Although a biopsy showed no cancer, my polyps were still a problem.
My voice doctor, Dr. Wilbur Gould, would advance my admiration of speaking well. He founded the Vocal Dynamics Laboratory at Lennox Hill Hospital in New York and was the director of the Voice Foundation. His client list included the rich, presidents and celebrities. I may have been his least famous patient, but he did wonders for me. I learned that my voice problem also plagues singers, actors, politicians, - and salespeople. People who use their voice as a living. The prescription after surgery was six months of silence. That was impossible since I had to make a living. So, I powered through again.
Cause of the polyps? Speaking improperly. Cure? Rehab – I received glorious Opera lessons as an alternative to silence. An understudy at the New York Metropolitan Opera trained my voice, my breathing and my formation of words. She taught me how to project my voice without straining through diaphragmatic breathing. Diaphragmatically breathing – breathing by relaxing and contracting stomach muscles rather than upper chest muscles, is a much stronger way to speak. It is easier, causes less stress, and it helps you project your voice clearly and forcefully.
Before this rehab, I used my upper chest and throat muscles to punch up and project my words. That strained my voice box and created polyps. But the voice box is not a muscle! It is the clarinet of the soul. I struggled at first because I was in the habit of non-diaphragmatic breathing. But, eventually, I could breathe diaphragmatically with ease.
Success for the rehab sessions was measured by speaking outside in New York City on Madison Avenue in mid-town without straining my vocal cords. I had to be clearly heard by my speech trainer across the street as one of those dirty old busses passed by. I had to do it without screaming or yelling, but with diaphragmatic projection. And I succeeded.
What was the root cause of my speech problems? It was not my muscles, my breathing, my vocal cords, or the polyps. My original condition arose because of my sense of inadequacy. I had little self-confidence. The new job created a lot of stress. My poor speaking was a symptom. In order to be successful, I repressed my anxiety and increased my stress to survive in the job, and my voice box paid the price.
After my treatment, I changed my speaking methods but never really conquered the anxiety, so I would still suffer with occasional laryngitis or excessive coughing. I remember several speaking fiascos where my throat froze - I froze. A best man's speech, a fund-raising event, and other times still haunt my memories. My search for a clear voice had started, but it would be a long path. But, now that I had a proper health prospective and a couple of voice tools, I was prepared for my next step forward.
In my 50’s, I moved to South Carolina and was attending a business group meeting trying to network. The guest speaker at the meeting was a Toastmaster there to tell us about his organization. David Fillion, DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster) presented the story of Toastmasters International. Perhaps it was a secret desire on my part to speak better and not just to advance my networking, but I joined Toastmasters anyway. Thank you Dave.
At this time, I thought I knew how to speak. After all, I had given thousands of business presentations, worked convention booths, and trained people on products, etc. I distinctly remember one convention at the Javits Convention Center in New York City -during the Hospitality and Hotel show. I pitched our product every ten minutes for three days. The next booth blared music and had dancers tapping up a storm. It required hard, intense, rapid, carnival barking. By the third day, I was hardly able to talk. I had to rest for ten to fifteen minutes before I could do another pitch. It took three weeks of rest to repair the damage done during the show.
Today – that convention would be no problem. Today I would use diaphragmatic breathing and the tools and techniques I learned at Toastmasters, teaching, and my own personal development.
At Toastmasters, I learned that there is so much to learn. Because I had years of sales experience, or perhaps because with age comes improved self-confidence, I flourished at Toastmasters. My thanks to the Toastmaster’s programs, and to the individual members who were so supportive.
A few months after joining Toastmasters, I was at a job fair at Spartanburg Community College, hoping to get an adjunct position to teach business courses. After all, I have years of business experience and an MBA. When I met with the team from the school at the front table,
