Nick, my ‘Mr Miyagi’ of leadership, has hit the target in the Art of the arrow: How leaders fly by capturing the very essence of what it takes to be a great leader. An outstanding read with years of invaluable experience rolled into just over 200 pages.
Adrian Goslett – CEO: RE/MAX of Southern Africa
It was such an awesome ‘experience’ going through chapter after chapter and almost reliving everything that you have taught me and my team at RICH about leadership over the years. Thank you for pulling everything together into one place – a great reference guide and/or reminder that we can go back to over and over again. The real life examples throughout the book really help to put the information in context, and provide real take away value to the reader. Anyone reading this book will find it an easy and extremely worthwhile read with simple to remember and valuable lessons.
Elizabeth Kobilski – CEO: Rich Products Corporation of South Africa
Wow! What a book! It is easy to read and flows nicely from one part to the next. I love the balance between professional and personal experiences that you have brought into the book to demonstrate leadership principles. What I found useful is that you relate past and present events – social, business, political and personal – in a simple but impactful way. I am sure the book will benefit new and experienced leaders.
Dan Moyane – Corporate Affairs Executive: MMI Holdings Limited; News anchor: eNCA
Nick Christelis has been my mentor for years, always encouraging me to push my professional boundaries and achieve more than I thought I was capable of. This book is a must-read for all those wanting to advance in their careers and be inspired by Nick’s many professional adventures. Nick’s unique story-telling ability will stay with you long after you’ve put the book down. I’ve always considered Nick to be my “Leadership Guru” and know you will too.
Katy Katopodis – Editor-in-chief: Eyewitness News
There is no better business school than the learning derived from the real business world. Over the years of interfacing with and consulting to CEO’s across the globe, Nick has obtained an in-depth and thorough insight into the dynamic of leadership.
He understands how the leader can cultivate an innovative successful business to grow exponentially and has also witnessed some leaders who merely plod on with no real focus!
I have been privileged to have worked with Nick during my years at Famous Brands. His mentoring and advice has at times been tough, but always valuable – he says it like it is but always guides you to take that quantum leap!
This book captures years of leadership expertise and knowledge, delivered in a practical way.

Preface by Steve Griessel
To say that Nick has had a big impact on my life and the lives of my colleagues is an understatement. Nick has been deeply involved in three organisations I have led, and all three times has been an integral part of our success.
During my tenure as Managing Director (President) of RCI Southern Africa, Nick worked with our team on two major initiatives over several years. The first was to instil the culture of our company at every level of the organisation so that it became a way of life.
The second was a continuous process of mentoring senior management into a strong unit that permitted people to utilise their talents fully in an open and driven environment.
When I became CEO of The Tourism Investment Corporation (Tourvest), a company which we listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 1998, I immediately invited Nick to become a core part of our team. Nick spent a substantial part of his time over the next four years working in a highly complex environment which quickly grew to 43 companies in various industries. His work ensured that everyone had a sense of purpose and the whole. He continually broke down barriers to communication, and at the same time helped us create a culture of constant learning and accountability.
After my family and I moved to the USA, I became the CEO of American Community Properties Trust, a diversified real estate firm with over 50 years of history, listed on the NYSE. The company owned and operated over 6,000 rental apartments and also owned more than 12,000 acres of land in St. Charles, Maryland, that we were developing into a beautiful community.
The company was facing the spectre of the financial crisis during 2008 and 2009 and much of the debt owed to banks was not going to be renewed. The management team and board of directors were faced with a complex turnaround situation needing quick and decisive action with no room for error.
In order to achieve this, with Nick’s help, we utilised the holistic approach that he had mentored me on over the years. This encompassed a new vision statement; facing the brutal reality; setting clear strategy, goals and actions; holding everyone accountable; building trust; and changing the reward system to face the new reality. We were not only able to avoid a potential disaster, but completely remade the organisation and created significant shareholder value.
Nick’s ability to grasp what needs to be done and have the flexibility to change on a dime as things unfold is incredible. He never approaches challenges with a set of canned presentations and always steps out of his comfort zone to allow the situation to unfold and adapts accordingly.
His exceptional knowledge of human behaviour and what it takes to be great as a person and a team has inspired me personally for many years. Don’t get me wrong, Nick will hold up the mirror to individuals and teams and get them to face the brutal reality. He is no pushover, but he does it with such genuine care that it allows defensi
