I have written this guide for all leaders and managers who want to be great Leader–Coaches. For leaders who are truly committed to coaching their people TO BE THE BEST THEY CAN POSSIBLY BE ! It introduces my philosophy of Courageous Coaching. This is a process through which Leader–Coaches – acting as loving boots – CHALLENGE ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things by RAISING their self-awareness and BUILDING their accountability to GROW AND ADVANCE ! Reading this guide will help you – as a Leader–Coach – to understand:
• What the Courageous Coaching philosophy is
• Why it is important (within the context of modern-day work and organisations)
• What qualities Leader–Coaches require to bring it alive
• How to Courageously Coach using the BUILD–RAISE model and questions
• How to change perceptions, perspectives and misconceptions through vital REFRAMING and MAGIC questions
• How BUILD–RAISE works in practice via a real-life Leader–Coach case-study example.
The Courageous Coaching Philosophy
At an organisational and team level, great Leaders ‘move’ people within organisations by inspiring them: mobilising positivity, shifting attitudes and behaviours, stirring feelings, resetting mindsets and galvanising teams into action. At an individua l level, they achieve the same outcomes by being expert Leader–Coaches : coaching and mentoring subordinates to higher levels of performance through what I term a philosophy of Courageous Coaching . So what is this?
Courageous Coaching takes place in a trusting one-to-one learning context where great Leader–Coaches help Coachees RAISE their self-awareness and BUILD accountability by CHALLENGING self-limiting mindsets, mobilising behavioural change and advancement so PEOPLE CAN BECOME THE BEST THEY CAN POSSIBLY BE!
But what is the significance of each component of this philosophy?
• Courageous Coaching – a process in which Leader–Coaches drop their ‘expert leader’ or ‘performance management’ persona (a courageous act in itself!) to CHALLENGE, SHIFT AND TRANSFORM false preconceptions of Coachees…
• Trusting one-to-one learning – a space outside normal ‘performance reviews’ where – with no hidden agendas – the focus is purely upon personal development and increased effectiveness…
• Great Leader–Coaches help Coachees – where the Leader–Coach facilitates and guides a coaching (and mentoring) process designed to improve and progress Coachees’ goals…
• RAISE their self-awareness – focusing upon uncovering ‘blind self’ and false preconceptions which might be holding them back…
• BUILD accountability – in order to generate genuine ownership of a clear goal, options to overcome obstacles and a plan of action…
• CHALLENGING self-limiting mindset s – reframing and breaking down misconceptions and false limitations and barriers…
• Mobilising behavioural change and advancement – leading to lasting behavioural change and sustainable progress (what great coaching is all about!)
• So PEOPLE CAN BECOME THE BEST THEY CAN POSSIBLY BE! – so that people can optimise their potential. This is a noble and worthwhile aspiration for both Leader–Coach and Coachee.

Further on, I will outline the core practices that great Leader–Coaches use during Courageous Coaching through the BUILD–RAISE method, but first I will outline why this skill is so
