What’s New in Windows 8?
W indows 8, the successor to Windows 7, was released for the market on October 26, 2012. It has been designed to run on conventional PCs and tablets. Microsoft also released the Surface tablet alongside Windows 8 to target the market of the Apple iPad and Android tablets.
Windows 8 definitely changes up your Windows experience. Though, the traditional Windows Desktop is still there, the new Start Screen is the thing to check out first. The Start Screen is large with colourful tiles which give quick access to activities like checking e-mail, watching your favourite videos, and accessing your Internet browser.
You will be quite frequently using both the modes of the Windows 8: Start Screen and Desktop Tile.
START SCREEN

Windows 8 Start Screen fills the entire screen with tiles that regularly update to show the latest weather, share prices, e-mail updates, and so on. The Start Screen though is specially designed for touchscreen devices(phone or tablet computer) but it also appears on your desktop PCs.
You might face some awkwardness initially using your mouse while you get familiar with the new Start Screen.
Note(for touchscreen users):
If you are using a touchscreen computer or mobile phone, substitute the word tap with the word click throughout the book. Tapping twice works similar to double-clicking. The term, right-click will mean touch and hold your finger on the glass and lift your finger when the right-click menu appears.
Desktop tile: Other mode you will be accessing frequently is your traditional Windows Desktop. Head towards the desktop tile on the Start Screen and your desktop will appear as shown in the Figure below:

Both the modes are useful in their own way. You can stay on the Start Screen for quick access to mail, videos, music, Internet, etc. And when normal work comes, you can go for the desktop, where your traditional Windows programs await.
As you can see, the Windows desktop no longer contains the traditional Start button and Start menu, you need to get familiar with the new Start Screen. To open a program, click the program’s tile from the Start Screen, and the Windows will take you to the desktop, where the program will be opened there.
