Description

When I retired if didn't long to be bored. So I decided to find a job that wasn't too paid and still let me earn some money. The main requirement was it had to be fun. I started out doing mystery shops which were fun except for the paper work and low pay. I had done demonstrations of all kinds of products when I was younger and on the fair and carnival circuit or in the off season in home shows and swap meets. While I was searching I kept coming across ads for product demonstrators. I found that I wouldn't have to travel much and could work when I wanted. The starting pay wasn't that great but I didn't need the money as much as I needed a purpose which I enjoyed. A little over 5 years ago I started as a food and product demonstrator. This was a fun job but standing for up to 6 hours became a struggle the older I got. About 3 years ago I transitioned over to alcohol demonstrations which paid better and I only have to stand for 4 hours. During the time I've been doing demonstrations I noticed the high turnover. Having been doing this for along time I thought that if people knew more about the job would be more prepared to not be so unreliable. I decided to write a book detailing all the available jobs, where they were, what was required for them and how to find a job.

Author’s Note

Warning This book is a guide to finding a product demonstrator job. It is not a historical or non-fiction book where all the facts have been checked and are 100% accurate. You are going to find things in here that you don’t agree with and you will probably find a few typos. I don’t claim to be an author. I’m still doing demonstrations and write from personal experience so cut me some slack and use it the way I’ve intended and that’s to learn about being a product demonstrator and how and where to find a job. Best of luck. Product demonstrators are also known as the following but for simplicities sake I will refer to them by that name. You may also find that a certain industry will always call them a distinctive name but they are a basically the same job:

Brand ambassador
Demonstrator
Event Specialist
Field Merchandiser
Food Demonstrator
Food Sampler
In store demonstrator
Merchandiser
Pet detective
Pet Retail Sales Merchandiser
Product Ambassador
Product consultant
Product demonstrator
Product demonstrator specialist

There are undoubtedly more of them but this is all I can think of right now.
While I’ve been writing this book I have found over 1,000 companies that either hire product demonstrators directly or through other companies. There are more than 600 companies in the USA, 80 in Australia, 135 in Canada, 35 in Ireland, 10 in Mexico, 55 in New Zealand and 160 in the UK. Many of these companies are complete with addresses, phone numbers and UR addresses along with email addresses. You will also find employment and staffing agencies that hire for various demonstration companies throughout the world. Although they are based in one country they may hire for other countries. Due to this I have only listed their web site addresses.
I’m sure I have only scratched the surface as I keep finding more but I have to stop looking or I wi never get this book published.
If you can’t find a job with these all of these companies you are just not trying. Don’t let these numbers overwhelm you, just check out a few at a time and sign up with as many as you want in the area that you want to work. Make notes on the ones that are of particular interest and if you don’t register with them at least keep them in mind until you have all the most interesting ones lined up. Check back with the ones you have registered with often as their needs for demonstrators change from day to day. The staffing agencies get new requests for demonstrators on a daily basis so register with the ones you believe are the best. The more places that have your information the more chances you will have to work.
A word of warning is that I will be repeating myself because many of the demonstrator jobs overlap. You may also find the same business names in more than one location. Also the fact that I’m not a writer will be apparent to many of you but just bear with me and use this to get a product demonstration job instead looking at it like a factual book. Remember that I am writing from experience and tell it like it is. Just use what interests you and don’t worry about the rest. You may get to it later after you’ve been in the business for awhile and are looking to expand to other parts of the demonstration industry.
You may also find jobs that are outside the conceived parameters of the product demonstration industry. I’ll be referring to all the jobs as product demonstrations although a lot of them won’t actually be doing that. For instance you will find modeling jobs, costume jobs, inventory jobs, mystery shopping jobs and many more as this covers every industry or business known to man. If they sound interesting check them out otherwise keep looking.
With the hundreds of companies I’ve listed in here you are bound to find something you like in your area. Most of the time you can land a job over the computer. You don’t have to dress up and have a forma interview so there is really no excuse for you not getting a job. Like I said before if you don’t get one you’re not trying.
If you finish reading this entire book you will know more about product demonstrating than most of the people you see doing it. A large amount of the information in here is common sense but it doesn’t hurt to have reminders that will later on make even more sense especially after you have been doing demonstrating for awhile. You may think I make it sound too good to be true when talking about the ease of getting a job and the lack of experience needed. Once you start doing them you’ probably wonder why this wasn’t offered to you before.

CHAPTER 1

What did you think when you saw someone demonstrating food or some other product? This might have been in a market, Costco, fairgrounds or some other venue. Did you wonder how they got the job, what they got paid, what they had to do in the job along with many other questions?
This book will answer a your questions plus provide you with over a thousand places that hire people to do demonstrations or for work that is similar to demonstrations. I’ve demonstrated almost every type of product you can think of. These included various products on fairgrounds, a type of products in home improvement stores, food and various products in supermarkets, nutrition products in health stores, tools in hardware stores and alcohol in grocery stores plus a number of other product and places.
Demonstration jobs consist of demonstrating or showing off many different products in a lot of different places for a lot of different companies. I’m going explain who you will be working for, what products you’ be demonstrating and where you’ be doing them. I’ also tell you what requirements you need to get a job, what you will need to do the job, what the job consists of and what you can expect to get paid. I’ve broken this down into categories with typical facts and figures. Remember these are genera and are not carved in stone. The most important part of this book is where to find the job you might be interested in although you will probably find the rest of the book very helpful.
It doesn’t matter where you live or what you are interested in there is probably a demonstration job available. I have just covered mostly the English speaking countries but a lot of what you will find in here will also apply almost anywhere in the world and a number of the employment or staffing agencies cover a parts of the world.
Becoming a product demonstrator is fairly easy as you will see from my experience in getting back into the business. I was getting too old to do all the traveling I used to do and wanted to stay closer to home.
When I retired and was getting restless I started looking for something to not only keep me busy but to also make a little extra money. About 7 years ago I started doing mystery shops & revealed shops. This was fun but I quickly grew tired of all the paperwork. After about a year I came across an advertisement for product demonstrating. I applied and was accepted. Once I started doing them I fell back into the routine I had when I was doing demonstrations at fairs and home shows a number of years ago. I thought about going back into that life but didn’t want the travel and grind that those kinds of demonstrations demanded. If you are young and unencumbered you might find this life exciting and very lucrative.
Although I enjoyed working for the company I started with I found that I was not getting a steady amount of work. I searched for and found other companies that were hiring but there were a lot of conflicting working dates. I decided I needed a company that kept me busier so after doing some searching I found the company I work for now. I was hired as a food demonstrator and one of the requirements for being hired was that I had to get a Professional Food Manager certification. At the time the company was just expanding into my area a
