#1

The internet has always been obsessed with how people present themselves online. We want to come across well, and we want people to like us. We want, in marketing terms, to build a brand.

#2

Personal branding is about identity. You intentionally craft a public identity for a specific purpose. People are getting tired of the constant noise and empty promises made by the latest internet millionaires. They want authenticity and warmth.

#3

When you decide to build a personal brand, you are already defined by someone or something. This is what makes entrepreneurship so addictive: it brings out the best in you, while also revealing your roughest edges.

#4

I was thirty years old and eighteen months into a position as the music director of a mid-sized church when I met with a pastor named Ross. I was shocked to realize that I didn’t want his life. I was climbing the wrong mountain.

#5

The truth is that life isn’t linear. It’s more like off-roading. You have to figure it out for yourself, and that’s when the comparison traps set in. If you’re anything like me, you tend to look at other people and assume their path is straight and narrow, when yours is the only one that looks like a scrunched-up accordion.

#6

Taking inventory of what you do is a great way to see yourself for the first time. When you see yourself through the lens of a company, organization, or role rather than your own skills, you fail to see your unique expertise.

#7

You should stop publicly reinforcing anything that has to do with your current or past career, including social media posts about how your day at work went, what you did at the office, or how much you hate your commute.

#8

Once you’ve created space, you should consider what type of market you want to be in: health, wealth, or relationships. Narrowing your focus can feel unsettling, but it’s important to put roots down first so if you decide to go in a different direction, you’ll be able to move from a place of strength.

#9

The Brand You Blueprint is an eight-step process that helps you build and strengthen your brand. Each step is built on top of the previous one, and if the previous step isn’t established, everything after it will eventually falter.

#10

It is hard to sell something that no one wants. To sell something, you must first know what people want. The five plays of the most successful personal brands and how they relate to productization.

#11

If you’re not clear on your positioning and products, your price becomes difficult to determine. You need to have the previous steps in the Brand You Blueprint built out before pricing your services.

#12

The Brand You Blueprint is a guide for building a personal brand. It helps you determine your positioning, validate your offer, and attract partners who promote you.
