Description
When you were a kid, you naturally knew how to communicate by using body language and words in combination. Somehow, over time, bad habits and fear buried that knowledge. Speech expert Richard Newman shows you how to utilize your body language so it supports rather than undercuts your message. If you’re looking for presentation advice, this is a good place to start.

Concrete Examples
Take-Aways You were born with everything you need to communicate effectively. Learn to dismantle old habits that work against you. The measurement of an “effective communication style” is whether people find your ideas convincing. Your words and actions must be “congruent.” Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Film yourself to make sure you aren’t subconsciously moving around in a distracting way. Lift up your whole body, hands above your head, up on your toes, then relax to achieve the “ready position” before speaking. To appear confident, gesture with your palms facing down. The “5 Ps” – “Pitch, Pace, Pause, Projection and Passion” – give power and emotion to your words. Drop your armor. Everybody sees right through it anyway, and it keeps you from connecting with your audience. Prepare to change your delivery by practicing several different styles. Hook the audience with a story. Lead them from pain to solution. That’s the hero’s journey, and your audience is the hero. Get into “peak-state” by using a 10-step process that begins with breathing deeply and visualizing your success.

Summary
The Natural Speaker
When speaking expert Richard Newman taught English to Tibetan monks, he found that body language was helpful when he had to communicate across language barriers. Newman had to match his words to his facial expressions to make himself understood.
