Everything you’ve been told about nutrition is a lie.
Eat less and move more. That is the message constantly being thrown at us each and every day. From nutritionists, to governments, to health professionals and the media. We are told the only way we can lose weight is if we eat fewer calories than we burn off. The popularity of weight loss programs such as Light n Easy and television shows like The Biggest Loser highlight this persistent thought process. It’s always about calorie control—controlling the portion sizes and restricting the calories.
It seems simple enough on the surface. The reason we are getting fatter and fatter, year after year is that we are simply eating too many calories and not burning enough off. After all, if you eat more calories than you burn you will put on weight, right? It’s that simple isn’t it? Or at least, so we have been told. Modern nutrition is based purely and solely around this seemingly irrefutable fact.
There’s only one problem with the whole calorie theory though. It is just plain wrong!
In fact, if we were to look at calorie reduction as a long-term sustainable way to weight loss and put it under the same scientific scrutiny that we put everything else under, calorie counting would never make it through. There are even text books on obesity that acknowledge that calorie restriction is an extremely ineffective way to treat obesity. You know, the very problem it is designed to solve in the first place! Despite this, calorie restriction is still to this day the main, and only real treatment option, recommended. That last sentence bears repeating. The main way in which our experts recommend to treat obesity is to use something they know does not really work in the long run!
But, our experts defend this claim and say that it all comes down to the inescapable laws of physics, if you put more energy into something than you take out, it will have to increase in size, i.e. if you eat more calories than you expend, you will get fat.
Well, I’m here to show you that the calories you eat are not the whole picture when it comes to how much body fat you have. And all of it can be explained without violating any of the laws that tie our universe together. More importantly for you, I will show you how you can go about eating more and more food AND be able to decrease body fat at the same time.
You already know from plain common sense that eating 2000 calories from pizza is not the same as eating 2000 calories from lean meats and fresh vegetables. This book will tell you the why.
This book is not about physics though, thankfully, it is about how you can achieve the body of your dreams and keep it that way for life. Yes, there are literally thousands of books available today about fads, diets and gimmicks as well as healthy eating. You have diets that cut this and diets that cut that and diets that let you eat anything you want. There is literally a diet to suit any personality type. The eat anything diet, the eat nothing diet (yes starvation diets are back in vogue). Yes, yes, we all know that fad diets are wrong. The experts have drilled that in to us for years. But, I’m going to go against the experts on this one, and say most of what nutritionists and dietary experts out there recommend is just plain wrong as well.
How can they all be so wrong you ask? How can so many experts be so wrong about everything to do with diet? It all comes back to just one little thing. Calories. Their whole entire house of cards is based upon this one fragile foundation. This one, seemingly irrefutable fact, on which the whole of their nutrition theory is based.
Modern nutrition science, and in fact almost every diet out there, is based upon ultimately this one thing—calories in, and calories out. They all say you must ingest fewer calories than you burn otherwise it is simply impossible to lose weight. End of story.
But is it?
What if the whole calorie theory itself was wrong? What if the very foundation of what our experts preach the world over turns out to be a fool’s promise?
The ideas outlined in this book are nothing new. The information is quite readily available for anybody who is willing to look, and the principles outlined resonate through the teachings of a number of health professionals the world over.
If you ask most nutritionists though, they will say we are simply eating too much, our portion sizes have increased over the years and we are just not moving around as much as we should. They say we watch too much TV, we drive everywhere, spend too much time in front of the computer, at our desks, and so on and so on. Most of these statements I don’t disagree with. But are they really all the reasons? Is that really the whole picture? Or is there something more at play?
Could it be that it doesn’t all come back down to calories at all? Could it be there is a better way to lose weight than simply eating less and exercising more? Our experts have been wrong about a lot of things in the past, could it be they are wrong about this too?
What I’m going to show you in this book is the evidence for why the calorie theory is incorrect. Not only that, I will show you how the body really works in losing body fat and how you can go about creating the best fat loss environment. And all of this information is still backed up by research and information that can be found in journals and any basic science textbook. Quite simply, I will show you just how your body works.
And if you want to have a lifetime of being lean, fit and healthy, then you would do well to go against modern nutrition dogma. Because when it comes to calories … don’t count!!

Chapter 1: Calories Don’t Count
“Of course it’s all about calories!” I hear all the naysayers unite.
“If I want to lose weight, all I need to do is watch my calories and the weight comes off!”
Or, “If I overeat, of course I put on weight.”
There are plenty of ways in which not only our experts, but the general public defend their calorie counting obsession. In fact, one of the arguments in favour of the calorie theory I have heard people use is something that has been termed the “peanut theory”. It goes a little something like this …
If you don’t believe that it is all about calories then go and eat an extra 10,000 calories a day coming from peanuts and see if you don’t put on weight.
Now, no one will refute the idiocy of this method of weight gain—or the fact that you will get fat on it—but it actually misses the point of calorie counting completely. My problem with the calorie theory is not that you can gain weight on a diet like this, but rather the following:
Let’s take that same increase in calories—10,000 extra calories per day—and change WHERE those calories come from. Have one group eat peanuts, another group eat the additional calories in the form of pasta, and another group get them from lean meats and vegetables (the latter one would be damn near impossible to do in terms of how much food you would have to eat). THEN let’s see HOW MUCH FAT each of these groups will gain. Do you think there would be a difference? I guarantee there would be!
This is what is wrong with the calorie theory, not the stupid peanuts. I don’t expect you to understand everything right away. And I don’t expect to tear down the very fabric of your reality in the blink of an eye, but stay with me here.
It’s interesting when most of the diets that are based on some form of calorie restriction make the contention that the only reason why certain other diets work – i.e. like decreasing carbohydrates or “eating clean” – is because they incidentally create a calorie deficit. Ironically, it is the other way around. It is the people that purely focus on calorie restriction that inadvertently affect some of the factors that really influence body fat. I’m not saying for a second that the amount of food you ingest isn’t a consideration. I’m just saying that it in no way works on the level that calorie counting people think it does. If the above statement sounds confusing, don’t worry. It will make more sense as the book goes on.
So, what exactly is the calorie theory? Before I go and start debunking the greatest dieting myth in modern history, we should probably start at the beginning.
Modern nutritional science in fat loss is based purely and simply on one basic assumption, that it all comes down to calories—calories in versus calories out. It is that simple, just eat fewer calories than you burn and you will lose weight. It’s not that hard to figure out, surely.
And, given that proteins and carbohydrates have four calories per gram and fat has nine calories per gram, well there’s another no brainer, drop the fat and it will be easier to drop calories for sure. After all, fat has more than double the calories of carbohydrates and proteins, it’s just simple maths right? People should lose weight easily right?
