PREFACE

Congratulations on purchasing this E-book! You have made a great decision. What you learn from this will help you to achieve a straightforward birth. You have taken the first step in actively participating in your baby’s birth and in choosing the way you’d like it to go.

The reason for me writing this book is that as an Antenatal teacher I felt frustrated that I could only reach a small minority of expectant parents. I have had many friends and acquaintances who would have loved to attend my classes, but due to distance or time constraints they were unable to. I thought: “wouldn’t it be a good idea to put all my teaching notes together, expand upon them and create a book of knowledge about giving birth which could reach a wider audience”. I have so much useful information to share and hope that by reading this it will enable you to create and achieve the birth of your dreams.

Most women, especially first time Mums have some concerns and worries about giving birth, so if you are one of these women you are not alone. With the help of this book and by preparing yourself well for labour, you can put those concerns aside and concentrate on looking forward to meeting your beautiful baby. It is such an exciting time for you!

INTRODUCTION

The best thing that you and your partner can do to prepare for birth ... is to approach it in a positive frame of mind. Fear and doubt will not serve you well here. Be excited! Look forward to meeting the new little person that you’ve created and put all fear aside. Giving birth is a natural process that women are beautifully designed to do. Believe in your own body’s ability to give birth well. There is researched evidence that shows how being stressed in labour has a direct impact on fetal distress. Remaining calm and stress free is the best way for labour to progress without complications for you and your baby.

Most women (about 80%) are able to give birth without any need for medical interventions. Of course there are some reasons why women may need medical assistance and it’s good that it’s there if needed. However, if you have a low risk pregnancy and would prefer a more natural labour there are definitely a lot of things you can do to make this more likely.

Having a straightforward birth is a great start to motherhood. If you feel that you are in control of your birth experience and that your wishes were carried out, you will be in a far better place to start caring for your new baby. If labour has been straightforward you will feel more physically fit and able to look after your baby too.

Creating the right birth environment is extremely important and plays a huge part in ensuring a straightforward birth. When women feel relaxed and safe during labour it allows their birth hormones to work well. These hormones (oxytocin and endorphins) are necessary to make the uterus contract efficiently and act as pain relief. If a woman feels stressed, worried, afraid or embarrassed the natural flow of these vital hormones becomes interfered with and contractions can slow down or stop. If this happens medical intervention is usually offered, which can change a straightforward birth into a medicalised one.

So get stuck into this now! By reading this book and learning all the important tips inside it, you can help yourself to a wonderful birth experience. I wish you lots of luck and a very happy Birth Day!
