Chronic candida is an invisible epidemic in our society today that is lacking a complete and effective health care regimen. Millions of people are suffering unwittingly with this condition as it may be an underlying contributor to numerous gastrointestinal disturbances, mental health conditions, neurological disorders, impaired cognitive or learning functions, antisocial behavior and conduct disorders, autoimmunity, addiction, inflammation, genitourinary, metabolic and endocrine system disorders, and much more. Holistic health counselor Cynthia Perkins has diligently researched the topic for nearly three decades and presents her findings in this groundbreaking book.

Healing Chronic Candida is your definitive guide to combating yeast overgrowth and its associated conditions. As the most up-to-date and comprehensive book on the subject at this time, it tackles critical issues that are often overlooked in the literature and treatment itself that can undermine healing like mutation and resistance, biofilms, co-infection with other microbes like SIBO, excess sympathetic nervous system activity, adrenal fatigue, sugar and carb addiction, contraindications with nutritional supplements or antifungals and other complications like excess histamine and glutamate.

Supported by hundreds of scientific studies Healing Chronic Candida will help you understand the magnitude and complexity of the problem, identify common yeast related conditions and develop a self-care protocol that optimizes your healing. It dispels the common myths and misinformation that abound around this topic and empowers the individual by arming them with the cutting-edge knowledge needed to take control of their own healing journey.

Integrative Psychiatrist, Dr. James Greenblatt, writes in the foreword that "Healing Chronic Candida is the most innovative, inclusive treatment model for candida I have encountered."

In memory and honor of Dr. Orian C. Truss for his outstanding and groundbreaking work on the topic of candida, which first brought this issue to light and completely altered the course of my life. I would not be the person I am today if he and his work had not come before me.
A special thanks to all the other brave pioneers in the field who have brought awareness to the issue of candida, and to all the practitioners I have worked with, and to the clients who have graciously shared their experiences with me, all of which I have learned from and grown both personally and professionally.

Foreword
H ealing is a journey. For too many, however, the path is long, arduous, and often frustrating, as our medical model doesn t always provide the clear path required for this journey. Over the past fifty years, there has been a growing movement to examine health disorders from a holistic point of view, incorporating factors from an individual s environment, nutritional intake, and lifestyle choices. There has also been an equally expansive body of evidence to suggest that there is a connection between the gut microbiome and a wide range of physical and psychological health problems. To this end, Cynthia Perkins s Healing Chronic Candida: A Holistic, Comprehensive, and Natural Approach offers a rich and succinct causality between the all-too-overlooked issue of candida overgrowth and human health.
As a clinician with over thirty years of medical practice, I have found candida to be a cofactor in a wide range of psychiatric disorders. As an integrative psychiatrist in the 1990s, my understanding of candida was based on the work of Crook and Truss. At that time, doctors, myself included, made dietary changes and used nutritional, herbal, and pharmacological antifungals to treat candida. Many patients got better; however, many also relapsed. It wasn t until I began the process of understanding the complex interplay of genetics, biochemical individuality, nutritional deficiencies, dysbiosis, and biofilms that I recognized that a personalized treatment program for each patient would begin to support patients in their journey to maintain health.
Healing Chronic Candida provides a detailed, well-organized, and easy-to-read overview of candida s biology and pathology. Cynthia Perkins places a particular emphasis on external factors that can lead to overgrowth, including poor diet, chronic stress, and antibiotic use. The second half of Perkins s book provides guidance in the design and implementation of candida treatments, first by covering the clinical effectiveness behind natural and pharmaceutical supplements, then by discussing lifestyle choices that can reduce the risk of overgrowth. Cynthia explains that the goal is not to eliminate all floras from the gastrointestinal tract, but instead to allow for the restoration of microbial balance.
In this groundbreaking book Healing Chronic Candida , Cynthia Perkins has explained and explored the scientific literature to help clinicians and patients understand the complex path of treating candida. This book is both comprehensive and concise in presenting a holistic model for the treatment of candida.
For most cases of health issues, patients and practitioners alike search for the singular underlying cause, with the hopes of uncovering a standardized treatment process. We have found this to rarely be the case-treatments always need to be personalized to individual needs and typically incorporate lifestyle changes for the better. Throughout the closing chapters of this book, the effects of diet and stress on controlling candida overgrowth are described in detail. This book provides a unique perspective on sympathetic dominance and methods to regulate activity within the sympathetic nervous system. In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in publications demonstrating the efficacy of stress reduction interventions for cases of addiction, anxiety, chronic pain, depression, and disorders of the immune system. Healing Chronic Candida includes a comprehensive overview of lifestyle factors in addition to nutritional supports.
As an integrative psychiatrist, my days are saddened by many patients unable to find relief by using traditional psychiatric models or oversimplified alternative models. Healing Chronic Candida is the most innovative, inclusive treatment model for candida I have encountered. Cynthia Perkins weaves clinical experience, scientific literature, and simplifies complex medical information into relevant, clinically astute treatment models that are easy to understand for both clinicians and patients.
This book provides readers with the science to understand candida, the strength to commit to a journey toward healing, but, most importantly, hope. This hope is required for a clear, guided path on the journey towards wellness and health.

INTRODUCTION

The Healing Journey
T he first and most important principle to understand about healing chronic candida is that healing is a lifelong journey, not a one-time event, and it is not always defined as a total cure. By cure I mean the complete eradication of overgrowth and a return to the lifestyle and diet one enjoyed prior to developing candida. Individuals who are fortunate enough to get a diagnosis shortly after acquiring candida and who have an exceptionally competent physician may achieve a total cure, but these people are rare. Because there are so few practitioners who recognize candida or have the expertise that is needed to treat it effectively, most people who have candida have it for decades, or even a lifetime, before receiving a diagnosis or finding a health-care provider who has enough knowledge to address all the critical aspects involved in healing.
Candida is among the most complicated, resilient, cunning, enigmatic, multifaceted, and adaptive organisms to be found. Chronic candida is exceptionally difficult to treat and very poorly understood. Even many doctors, practitioners, and remedy manufacturers who specialize in candida do not possess a deep understanding of the organism s complexity, depth, adaptable nature, and uncanny ability to survive. I ve been researching and analyzing it for nearly three decades and I regularly discover new eye-opening and jaw-dropping information and find myself astonished by its unique yet frightening characteristics.
When one has housed candida overgrowth for an extended period of time, it becomes deeply ingrained in the body and very difficult, if not impossible, to eradicate completely. The longer the organisms have been present the more well-established and hardy their society becomes. Furthermore, candida possesses a wide array of abilities that enable it to evade detection and eradication, outwit even the most well thought out treatment plan, and continue to thrive. It is relentless and determined. On top of that, once candida is in place, numerous other conditions can develop-including sympathetic dominance, impaired detoxification, adrenal fatigue, parasite and bacterial overgrowth, hormone imbalances, inhibited immunity, nutritional deficiencies, leaky gut, and others-creating a vicious circle that fuels more overgr
