HEALING IS POSSIBLE
New Hope for Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Persistent Pain, and Other Chronic Illnesses
N EIL N ATHAN , M.D.
Foreword by Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D.
AUTHOR’S DISCLAIMER: This book is not intended to be used as a treatment manual, but rather as a starting point for understanding your illness and as a catalyst for initiating the next steps in your medical journey. As excited as I hope you will be to try the treatments described in this book, they each present a risk or danger to you or your family under certain circumstances. Therefore, do not embark on any treatment without the assistance of a medically trained, knowledgeable, and experienced professional who is familiar with the details of the testing and treatment programs described.
Throughout this book, with a few exceptions that are clearly noted, I have changed the names of the patients who have consented to have their case histories presented here. While this has been done to protect my patients’ privacy, I have taken care to present their medical information as accurately as possible.
As medical information evolves, so does the work in progress that represents our life stories. By the time this book has gone to print, some of the details of medical information may have changed. What you read in this volume is the best, most accurate truth that I have access to at this time, subject to change at a moment’s notice. I will do my utmost to stay at the cutting edge of those truths.

About the Author
I promised many, many years ago that if I ever wrote a book I would dedicate it to my beloved wife, Cheryl. I love the word dedication. It not only fulfills my promise, but it also describes our incredible relationship. She is my muse, inspiration, support, and nurturance, and without her, I strongly suspect that this book would not have come into being. Thank you, from the bottom, middle, and top of my heart .
Foreword
A lthough the rest of the planet is moving into the twenty-first century, most of our healthcare system is fixed firmly in a well out-of-date past. This book describes how having an open mind and an intellectual curiosity, combined with a compassionate heart, can turn a standard physician (an M.D.) into a cutting-edge holistic physician. This book can also teach you the tools that may help you reclaim your health—even when your standard physician mistakenly believes that “nothing that can be done.”
And Then Came Dr . Nathan . . .
A funny thing happens when a bright, well-educated physician sees treatments work that medically are not supposed to (for example, hypnosis, chiropractic, herbals). As Winston Churchill once said, “We often stumble over the truth. Fortunately, we usually manage to get up, brush ourselves off, and walk away quickly before any real harm is done.”
But Dr. Nathan didn’t walk away quickly enough.
In a world where most doctors only hear about the newest and most expensive (and most toxic) treatments, Neil Nathan has discovered that medicine has lost its way. Having found that numerous natural, safe, and inexpensive therapies work far better than prescriptions, he has dedicated his life to applying these discoveries for his patients’ well-being. Though he tends to be easygoing, helping those patients who found their way to him was not enough. His caring and compassion have driven him to help as many as he can. So he decided to write this book.
Hope
Are you frustrated with how medicine has become a cold assembly line? Are you losing hope that your doctor will ever truly understand you, or the impact your illness is having? Have you given up on finding a doctor who can actually help you?
Dr. Nathan’s book shows you that there is hope in medicine and in a caring medical practice.
He starts where a doctor should—at the beginning: What are the simple and most critical nutrient and hormonal deficiencies? Magnesium deficiency, for example, can be presumed to be present in most Americans and causes unnecessary suffering and debility, as well as way too many premature deaths. The average American gets less than 300 mg of magnesium a day versus more than 600 mg in a standard Chinese diet, because of the magnesium losses in food processing. Encouraging magnesium supplementation—at a cost of a nickel a day—is not glamorous, but it could easily save your life. Dr. Nathan recognizes that hormonal deficiencies are also running rampant and are usually missed by our incredibly inaccurate lab testing. He then tells you what you need to know to take care of these problems. Having a doctor who recognizes and starts with the basics is a real gift!
From these basics, Dr. Nathan will take the reader into new worlds of ideas and inspirations that most physicians will never open their mind to—simply because those ideas are cheap and simple, and there is, therefore, no money in encouraging their being taught at the big pharmaceutical advertising orgies we call “scientific medical conferences.”
What happens in Dr. Nathan’s new world of natural healing therapies is no less than magical. Illnesses and problems that your physician said were incurable (and sometimes not even diagnosable) become clearly understood, and a path is laid out for you to reclaim your health!
Along the way, you will find that Dr. Nathan shares many personal stories about how the treatments he discusses have helped individual patients. Knowing Dr. Nathan well, I understand that he does this for a very simple reason. He takes his patients’ and now his readers’ well-being very personally.
I think you will enjoy reading this book. When you are done, you will enjoy reclaiming your health—and a life you love!
Love and Blessings,
Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D.

Acknowledgments
F irst, I would like to express my deepest thanks to Dr. James S. Baumlin, professor of English at Missouri State University. Jim took a fledgling writer/physician who had only completed a few chapters of a book, and encouraged, coaxed, prodded, and thoroughly supported that effort through its completion.
Next, I wish to express my profound gratitude to Casey D. White, who spent long days and nights converting my efforts into a completed manuscript and never seemed to tire of keeping me on track. Thanks, I needed that!
This book could not have come into being without the superb talents of Carol Rosenberg and the staff of Basic Health Publications. For this I am ever grateful.
I must thank, of course, my wonderful wife, Cheryl, for her constant support and encouragement, and also our three dogs, Kai, Jesse, and Joey, and our cat, Lucia, whose silent but palpable encouragement was noted and appreciated.
Without the dedication, commitment, and caring of my fabulous Springfield, Missouri, staff, Neva Dix and Kevin Joyce, this work would not be possible. The pursuit of healing requires a group effort, and I don’t think I could have had a better team covering my back at all times.
Now that my family and I have moved to Northern California, I am part of a new team at Gordon Medical Associates, and I am grateful to Eric Gordon, M.D., my friend and colleague, as well as our associates, Wayne
