Dedication
I did not have to spend a single moment thinking about whom I was going to dedicate this book to. It was so very clear; right from the time I conceived the idea about writing this book.
This book is dedicated to my sterling lifemate, Ajoy. Youthful, relaxed and in control, he is the ultimate symbol of fitness. Touchwood!!
Preface
M an has always wanted to remain youthful. He has wandered in search of the ultimate panacea to ageing, seeking his immortality and youth. Being youthful is a state of mind. There are hundreds of people who do not look their age and to those hundreds there are thousands who look older than age. It is all to do with the mind-body and spirit connection. With research, it is becoming more and more evident that our bodies are governed and controlled by our mind. In fact, about 85% people residing in the urban areas suffer from ailments that have no organic origin. The amazing impact of our thoughts on our body and health is beyond comprehension.
Why do people age? This is a mystery that is yet to be solved by the scientists. One cannot stop the process of ageing but one can certainly retard it by a considerable extent. It is difficult to put the clock back but holding it is possible. Science has increased the life span of human beings. One look around us will reveal quite a few interesting things. Today, the youth are greying and ageing at a faster rate than people did about a couple of generations back; it is not uncommon to find young men and women with greying hair, aged and unhealthy bodies. The youth today are unhealthier than the earlier generation at their age. In fact, one can still find active sixty or seventy year olds. They are fitter and healthier because of the lifestyle they had observed during their youth. In so many cases, I have found the parents to be fitter than their children.
The present generation has a stress ridden existence, which when combined with unhealthy eating habits, environmental pollution and sedentary habits, can only spell trouble. Considering this, it is not surprising that people are ageing at a faster rate than ever before. What they need to do is to jump off the fast track and decelerate their lives.
What is it that ages one person faster than the other, all things being equal? There are four major factors that can be counted for this malady.
• Wrong diet • Lack of exercise • Stress • Environmental hazards
Many of us look after our cars better than we look after ourselves. We snatch hurried meals, often of ‘convenience’ foods, sleep ftfully, without being properly relaxed, travel stressfully in crowded buses or trains or drive in traffic choked roads, our lives ruled by the clock. We accept excessive demands from home and work, incessantly neglecting our real needs, but eventually the constant strain of living out of tune with ourselves begins to take its toll. We may become irritable and overtired and fall prey to a host of minor infections, aches and pains. Sadly, however, few of us stop to ask why we are doing all this and still fewer of us recognise our ills as a consequence of our own self-neglect.
To remain youthful and healthy, one does not start at the age of fifty, but it is a gradual process of self -discipline, nurturing healthy habits and a perception of the long time goal. The earlier one begins to maintain healthy habits, the better. I would go to the extent of saying that one should begin with the discipline when one is in the twenties.
We do not think about ageing when we are twenty, it seems so far away. We continue to abuse our body, subjecting it to all kinds of unhealthy treatments of lifestyle. We do not even think about it when we are thirty; ageing still remains a distant problem. We are busy making time for our career and future. It is only when we are in our late thirties rather early forties, I would say, when we start worrying about the ageing process. We begin to worry, not because it is no longer a distant problem, but because the years of neglect begin to take a toll on our health.
It is said that longevity of human beings has increased in the last three decades. Has it really? I think that people lived longer and were healthier, about fifty years back than they are now. Lesser number of people died from coronary attacks and diabetes or cancer than today. The young were strong and youthful unlike the present youth. The major advances in improving life span made by medical science have been a result of decreased infant and child mortality. However, if you remove the child mortality factor from the life expectancy figures, it will be obvious that we are not doing as well as we may have concluded. In fact, the probability of living longer and healthier after the age of forty has remained relatively constant.
In a bid to enjoy our lives, we live in a fast lane that leaves us no time to care for our body. It is like buying a new and fashy car. It runs very well initially and we enjoy the drives, not really bothering about the maintenance part. After all, it is running fne! A few years later, it begins giving us problems. The shine and gloss fade and the mechanical parts start wearing out. We begin getting a little worried but still we do not find the time to give it our attention. Then one fne day, just as we are returning from a party, late at night, our faithful car stops suddenly at a lonely spot. We curse it, kick it and try all stunts but it refuses to budge. The neglect of all the years has taken its toll. We suddenly realise that we should have taken better care of the car, which would have prevented our getting stranded on the roadside.
I have given this analogy to illustrate how our lifestyle influences our body and how we continue to neglect it when we are young. Instead, if we were to pay a little attention to the body in our prime years, it will serve us better in the later years of our life. Looking and feeling youthful is all a part of being aware of the requirements of the body and giving it the due respect.
Caring for the body should begin even as we are in our twenties. It is never too early to start respecting our bodies.
This book, therefore, is aimed at teaching you to be aware of and to honour your own needs, both physically and psychologically, so that you can avoid some of the damages on your health and energy, that twenty-first century living can entail. Heed now to the needs of your body, listen to it and stop abusing it!

A YOUTHFUL BODY
What really is a youthful body? A youthful body, to some people, would mean having boundless energy, vitality and an irrepressible spirit. To others it would mean having a body that is without any disease and to yet others, it could mean leading a full life without the hassles of being worried about fatigue and tiredness. To me it means having a spring in the walk, a song on the lips and a general feel-good attitude. It also means being strong enough to cope with all kinds of adversities and situational crises.
In fact, all these premises are correct. A youthful body is one, which doesn’t lack in energy and vitality and is free of diseases. So what has age got to do with youthfulness of the body? One can remain youthful till a ripe age through fitness and discipline. The process of ageing is not just about the body; it also has a lot to do with one’s attitude about life. At the same time, just feeling youthful may not really help unless you are physically fit because when the joints are aching and the energy fagging, youthfulness seems such a far dream. And how does one remain fit and young? That is what we will deal with, in this section.
Chapter 1
YOUTHFUL FITNESS
B eing youthful means having a fit body. There cannot be two ways about this. An overweight and unfit person can never remain youthful. We all know the importance of remaining active and energetic. Hundreds of books have been written on this subject. An active life coupled with a regular exercise regimen is the key to a fit body.
The very appearance of a person displays his fitness. A fit person has a glow on the face and a good posture. Fitness of the body can be of two kinds - “Organic fitness”, generally pertains to a body free of disease and infrmity; in basic terms it means healthy; while “Dynamic fitness” means endurance, flexibility, and strength of the body.
The awareness about physical fitness has grown in leaps and bounds. If you look out of your window any morning or early evening, you are likely to spot a jogger or a walker. The magazine on your coffee table is likely to have a jogger or a fitness enthusiast on its cover. TV commercials prom
