Sample Book Insights:
#1 The ketogenic diet is a very effective way to control seizures in refractory childhood epilepsy. It is not an extreme diet, and has been used to treat epilepsy since the 1920s.
#2 The public has been scared about the keto diet because of some false scaremongering about the dietary changes required to induce it. However, ketones are not a toxic substance in your body, and they are not the cause of diseases.
#3 Ketosis is a metabolic state that occurs when you eat a very low-carb, moderate-protein, high-fat diet that forces your body to switch from using glucose as its primary source of fuel to running on ketones. Ketones are produced when the body burns fat, and they are used as an alternative fuel source when glucose isn’t available.
#4 Ketone bodies, which are produced during the process of keto-adaptation, provide an alternative fuel for the brain, heart, and most other organs when serum glucose and insulin levels are low.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The ketogenic diet is a very effective way to control seizures in refractory childhood epilepsy. It is not an extreme diet, and has been used to treat epilepsy since the 1920s.

#2

The public has been scared about the keto diet because of some false scaremongering about the dietary changes required to induce it. However, ketones are not a toxic substance in your body, and they are not the cause of diseases.

#3

Ketosis is a metabolic state that occurs when you eat a very low-carb, moderate-protein, high-fat diet that forces your body to switch from using glucose as its primary source of fuel to running on ketones. Ketones are produced when the body burns fat, and they are used as an alternative fuel source when glucose isn’t available.

#4

Ketone bodies, which are produced during the process of keto-adaptation, provide an alternative fuel for the brain, heart, and most other organs when serum glucose and insulin levels are low.

#5

Ketones are the by-product of the body burning fat for energy, and they appear in the blood primarily as beta-hydroxybutyrate. They are used as an energy source by just about every cell in the body, including brain cells.

#6

There are three primary reasons to enter a state of ketosis: the metabolic superiority of fats as a fuel, the mental enhancement that takes place with adequate ketone levels, and the greater health and longevity that come from controlling blood sugar levels naturally.

#7

Ketosis is an excellent way to lose body fat. When you are keto-adapted, you generate energy from both your body fat and dietary fat. However, when you consume excess carbohydrates, they turn into body fat, which cannot be easily accessed for fuel.

#8

Ketosis is the state in which the body burns fat instead of glucose for energy, and it can be achieved through a low-carb diet. It has many health benefits, such as reduced blood sugar levels, improved cognitive function, and increased energy.

#9

Ketosis has received a negative reputation in the medical community because of the word ketosis, which is similar to ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition in type 1 diabetics. Many doctors scoff at the idea of allowing their patients to get into a state of ketosis because they immediately think of the negative side effects associated with ketoacidosis.

#10

Many doctors are ignorant about ketosis, and when they see the presence of ketones in a patient’s urine, they automatically assume the person is starving himself or about to become diabetic. This is a big obstacle for people trying to go on a ketogenic diet.

#11

Ketone bodies are not dangerous for non-diabetics, as long as they can produce even a small amount of insulin. If you can’t produce any insulin, ketones will naturally remain at safe levels, and you won’t get sick.

#12

Ketoacidosis is a dangerous condition for diabetics, but for everyone else, blood glucose levels drop when ketosis is used for therapeutic purposes.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

Ketogenic diets are nothing new, and the late Dr. Robert C. Atkins was a pioneer in promoting them. He focused on carbohydrate restriction, and less on ketosis, which was largely because of the confusion between the two.

#2

The underlying formula for the most part is the same: omit sources of dietary sugar and starch, moderate protein intake to no more than 2 to 3 ounces per meal, and then consume as much dietary fat from a variety of natural sources as desired or required to meet essential fatty acid needs and basic satiety.

#3

Ketosis can only be achieved through a low-carb, moderate-protein, high-fat diet. The only way to tell if an Atkins diet is inducing ketosis is by checking for ketones in the blood.

#4

It is not necessary to do any testing to experience the benefits of ketosis. However, eating low-carb is the first step to being keto-adapted. We will dive into the details of what ketosis entails in the next chapter, but for now just remember that ketosis is not ketoacidosis.
Insights from Chapter 3

#1

The positions these groups take on ketosis are all based on misinformation and confusion. We’ll spend the rest of this book explaining the truth about ketosis and its amazing health benefits.

#2

The American Heart Association is another well-known and prestigious health group that discourages the consumption of a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet, claiming that it is high in protein that may cause nausea.

#3

WebMD states that when you don’t consume enough carbohydrates in your diet, your body will begin using blood sugar that is stored in the liver and muscles before eventually switching over to using ketones and fatty acids for fuel. They warn that this can lead to serious consequences, including heart palpitations and cardiac arrest.

#4

Some online sources describe ketosis as a potentially serious condition if ketone levels go too high. However, this is not a joke. And yet this is the kind of misinformation that we find online about ketosis brought on by consuming a low-carb, high-fat diet.

#5

Many doctors are not aware that a ketogenic diet lowers insulin levels and that this directly affects the kidney’s handling of sodium and water. Low insulin levels are a signal to the kidney to excrete sodium and water, whereas the high insulin levels associated with a high-carbohydrate diet are a signal to retain sodium and water.

#6

The most outspoken proponent of a vegan diet, Dr. John McDougall, believes that ketosis is the same thing that happens during starvation, which is why he describes ketosis as the make-yourself-sick diet.

#7

During periods of starvation or fasting, the human brain can easily switch over to using ketones as an alternative to glucose. If we are on a high-carbohydrate diet that suppresses ketone production, and have no other dietary source of ketones, we cannot expect that our brains will function as well.

#8

The American Diabetes Association notes that ketones are a byproduct of the body breaking down fat for energy, and that high levels of ketones can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis and coma. However, as long as your blood sugar remains low, you have nothing to fear from ketosis.

#9

Many doctors and other health professionals have recognized the benefits of a ketogenic diet, which is why they have been prescribing it to their patients.
