I often make the comment (in my best Gru voice), “If I had a few minions, I could rule the world!” However, a huge feat or accomplishment is never done alone, but by the combined efforts and sacrifice of many. “ What’s Eating You ” is not any different. Although the idea for the PREP acronym and concept of the book may have been conceptualized in a Condo on the Marina, it took numerous months, the right test subjects, and many headaches and sacrifices to birth this incredible outcome.
First and foremost, I thank God for giving me this amazing opportunity to utilize this precious gift that He has bestowed upon me. James 1:17 (ESV) says, “ Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow .” I thank Him for His grace and mercies that abound, each and every day. We are all given a precious gift from our Father, don’t leave it in the beautifully wrapped box. Moreover, I urge you to wear out every bit of your gift until the wheels fall off!
I thank my sweet family, especially my sister, Tracy Evans, for offering encouragement when needed, an enduring love that has taken us all through many victories and yes, even the most difficult of trials.
To my sweet Pastor, Paul Trentacoste, and our beautiful first lady, Malinda Trentacoste, I am forever grateful for your love, friendship, and unending support. In addition, I thank my Pastor for offering himself up as a willing test subject for our many PREP experiments. I love our “FAM” dearly!
Every author needs an individual who is willing to yield a sharp red sword or in this matter, a gel pen and with precision cut, shuffle and even discard grammatical and spelling errors to create a more refined product. Much love to my dear friend and editorial knight, Dan Gilliland, who spent numerous hours going through the initial transcript, to produce an amazing initial edited version of this book. Many, many thanks to a new friend and the mastermind behind the final product, Pam Eddings. She made this diamond in the rough, shine far brighter!
Writing a book doesn’t just happen over the course of a few weekends, at least not for me. It took a few years of persistence and tremendous support from those around me. I couldn’t have gotten through this process without my work family (shout out to Anna Delrio and Michelle Pell) who became incredible sounding boards and helped me through the good, bad, and even ugly days in the writing process. I have a tremendous amount of gratitude and respect for Dr. Katherine L. Williams, who saw the potential in a novice Nurse Practitioner, as well as providing an opportunity to get away and relax that would ultimately become the inspiration for this book. I would be remiss not to thank the multitude of female patients I have had the honor to care for in the last 17 years as a Nurse Practitioner. You allowed me to be a part of your weight loss and wellness journeys, which provided a platform for my personal growth and development in this healthcare field.
Although we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, I am so thankful for such a creative and beautiful team that made the cover, just over the top! Many thanks to Sonya Perilloux for her amazing photographic eye and incredible pictures for the cover, and to our gorgeous model, Allison Brooks for bringing the cover to a whole other level. You guys are rock stars! One of the most arduous tasks a writer can have, is finding the perfect title for their book. One that gives the reader immediate access into the mind of the writer and what the book is all about. This part was truly a struggle, but a patient and friend of mine Angelle Lyman, who I also participated in some HIIT (cough, torture, cough) workouts with, hit a homer right out of the park! She came up to me before a class and said, “You know I have a title for your book. I was praying about it and felt like God put it in my heart!” Before I could even get the words out of my mouth, she blurted out “What’s Eating You?” My mouth dropped open, and I was in awe. Unbeknownst to her I had been praying that God would send me or give me the perfect title. That my friends, is what an answered prayer looks like! I truly thank you Angelle for being sensitive to the Lord and having something that was dear to me, on your heart as well.
I would like to thank you, our reader, who took a chance on this concept, and I pray that you are able to create an environment of overall wellness and weight loss that will last a lifetime. Lock that emotional monster in his cage, and please, throw away the key!
Last, and by all means not least, my dear husband Bryan. As I sit upstairs working on this acknowledgement, he is selflessly cleaning the hot mess that I created in prepping our meals for the week! I am so thankful for your undying love, unwavering support, and helping me to “rig up” wings for my dreams to take flight. I love you dearly.
Introduction

To The Moon, A lice!
“The Honeymooners” is a classic sitcom from the early 1950s, when television had just been making its big debut. It featured the main character, Ralph Kramden, who always appeared to be perpetually flustered but incredibly optimistic. He is well-known for the iconic phrase, often directed at his wife, “To the moon, Alice, To the Moon!” Obviously, the implication of this statement was extremely derogatory, but it captured a glimpse of what this character was feeling. Ralph was at the brink. Enough was enough. Of course, this was a fictional storyline, meant to amuse but more importantly impart a fraction of truth into the day-to-day lives of so many blue-collar workers of that era. Many, many individuals will have that same “To the moon” moment in their lives when they are dealing with unwanted weight gain or an unhealthy lifestyle.
Now, there are two types of individuals that will pick up this book and read it from cover to cover. There are those who have moments of clarity; they recognize that there is a need in their life and that changes need to be made. Then there are those who will have the ultimate aha moment, finding themselves literally on the brink. The difference between the two comes down to endurance, discipline, and an unwavering tenacity. Which one are you? Where do you find yourself residing today?
If I can impart anything to you through these next several chapters, it would be for you to find your aha moment. Make everything you plan on doing, worth it for the long haul. Fad diets, gimmick supplements, and trendy eating plans tout fast, easy results. However, we know that something that is truly worth having will come at a cost. It will take sacrifice, tapping into resources and the dedication of your time. However, can I tell you, that if you find that aha moment, that moment where it all makes sense and you have the much-needed epiphany, that is where you will find long-term wellness and weight loss that can become the lifestyle that you have envisioned.
