Preface
Dealing with the COVID-19 Coronavirus was very different for many of us. I lived in New York City when the virus hit the United States. The time we were in quarantine was initially a surreal and uneasy experience for me. My life went from being busy in the hustle and bustle of the city that never sleeps to complete isolation. Now all I had was a lot of time on my hands.
During the Pandemic, my spiritual awaking started to happen. I started my meditation practice about five years ago. I thought I was always living my life as an awake human being. Man, was I wrong! I want to share my experiences with you on how I survived the Pandemic so you have the tools and lessons I had. I wrote this book to teach you how to survive in an unpredictable world! Once you finish this 30-Day Guidebook, you can share your story of how you survived and be there for another person. Once you go inside who you are, nothing on the outside could ever hurt you again.
For the first time, I felt great fear. I was scared for my life, family, friends, country, and every human on the planet. I had the strongest urge to go outside, see the sky and trees, and feel the grass under my feet to know everything would be okay. It was the first time I got to breathe fresh air again. My fear quickly melted into a feeling of love and compassion for every living thing. Tears poured out of me, and a genuine sense of peace and stillness overcame me.
I asked what is the message that this quarantine was telling me? What is the message it is telling the world? What could the universe be telling us if we would only listen?
My story starts at age six, 1970, in the Bronx, NY. My mother told me to go outside and play in the traffic. This was a family joke whenever my brother and I bothered my mother. As a child, I had a lot of energy, so going outside filled that need for the time being. When I returned to the house, it was full of relatives. My mother asked me, “What’s in your hand?” I opened my hand and revealed four quarters. My mother asked, “How did I get them? I said I helped older people bring in their grocery bags, and they gave me money in return.
My mother said, “You are a good son, and I love you so much. Please take your cousins to the store and buy them candy.” When I look back at that time, it was a defining moment that shaped me into who I am today. I learned helping others could make me money, and my mother taught me that I should be grateful for what I have and share it with others who might not have what I have been blessed with.
When we moved from NY to a small town on the outskirts of the Florida Everglades, I had a place to release my energy. I had a pony, pool, large open spaces, and kids my age. My days were fun, and lots of things to do. The blessing of living in a small country town was that I had four loving, caring women raise me. Unconditional love was something that was never lacking in my childhood.
At twelve, I felt the little entrepreneur was born. I became eager to earn money. I asked for a new pair of jeans one day, and my mother asked me how much they cost? I said fifteen dollars. She told me if I got fifteen dollars, she would take me to the Mall to buy them.
My second mother was my next-door neighbor. She had two sons I played with, who were older than me, and I looked up to them. She was a stay-at-home mom and always there when I needed her. She passed away in her 50s, and I miss her a lot. Reflecting on my childhood, she was a massive part of who I am.
The lessons I received from all my moms were always to look out for your neighbors, and they will look out for you.
Off I went to my third mother’s house. She was a teacher and the most loving, sharing person I ever meet. I asked her if I could wash her car. She said how much do you charge? I told her fifteen dollars. She said that’s a little high, but if you throw in my husband’s car, you have a deal. She was very generous with her students, family, and friends. Another defining moment in my life. What she shared with me and others was a massive part of my upbringing. When she retired from Broward County Public School, they named a park after her. That’s how loved and respected she was for all she gave to everyone she had ever met.
My fourth mother is an incredible woman who I have always admired. She could overcome any life-threatening challenge that came her way, and she always handled any difficulties with a positive sense of humor. I am proud to call her one of my dearest friends, and I love spending time with her.
Whenever a new neighbor would move in, I would greet them. I was always starving for anyone different than me. One day a family moved into our neighborhood. The father came from Cuba at 17 years old and did not speak English. He worked as a custodian for a large company in Miami, Florida. Within ten years, he learned English and became the company’s Regional Director. Another defining moment in my life. No matter where you come from, you can come to the United States and follow your dreams.
When a family with eight kids moved onto the block, I was excited to have new friends, and we are still friends after all these years. That bond can never be broken when you grow up with the same values and respect for others.
I used my parents as role models and tried to only take the good parts from them. When I was taking culinary classes at a local community college, I saw a sign that said they needed volunteers for the Covenant House, a place for runaway teens. I joined their culinary team and prepared food two days a week for runaway teens. That was a way to give back what I was so blessed to have.
The message I learned during my quarantine was that I needed to share my experiences with others so they could be aware of who they are and how they can help others.
By writing this book, I hope people will look inside and see the gifts given to them, become whole and share their skills with others. I hope that they will be a naturally adaptable person and be close to others.
Dedication
I dedicate this book to my parents, Barbara Elizabeth O’Mara and the late James Oliver Newell, my late Aunt Jean Ann Sano, and my late nephew, Edward Newell.
I want to thank my sister Christine Margaret Newell and my brother James Joseph Newell for all their love and support.
I also had the honor of spending the last seven months of my beloved dear friend, Ruth Zimmerman Klatzko’s, life with her. She not only showed me what it is to be loved unconditionally, but she also told me how I was special daily. For that, I am very thankful.
